Yes. The '97-'98 (maybe some of the '99s) 3.0L Montero Sport had the AW4. Different adapter housing and output shaft. A couple guys on here have replaced newer (different) A/Ts with the AW4. There's a thread here that details some of the A/T swap.

Different output adapter housing (swap the Mitsu version for the Cherokee version), Cherokee 23-spline output shaft and a change to the output speed sensor. I believe you will also want the later '90s Cherokee AW4 - the '97 should be fine. TCU and harness for that A/T or go full manual shift. I can't speak for the older 3.0L engines though. I think there's a difference between the 3.L pre-'96 and post-'96 that may require a different bell housing. Others will know more about that than I do. I only deal with the late '90s stuff. laugh
