Test for spark at the coil. Pull the coil wire at the distributor, insert a screwdriver in the connector, hold it 1/4" inch from engine metal, and crank it. Do NOT let the metal of the screwdriver touch you, or the experience will be memorable. Spark should jump the gap,blue-white and hot, 3 sparks per engine revolution. Repeat with a wire pulled from a handy plug.

So the pcv system wasn't backed up, what else could be causing this excess pressure?
