When you do your new seals on the oil cooler, you dont have to loose your coolant. All you need to do is bite some vice grips on the hose then pull it off the assembly.

I took a good look today. It looks like both valve covers are leaking. However, not enough to have them fixed. rocky, I think my major leak is coming from the oil cooler. Next weekend I plan on installing my Aisin hubs (if they get here) and changing the oil. While I'm at it, I'll but that outside gasket for the oil cooler and install that. I dont have that big of a metric end wrench. However, I broke the bolt loose today with a 6 point 15/16th and it worked fine. Thanks rocky for the post. Thanks for the pic Firefyter_Emt. Im gonna try the idea that 96_1st_Responder had and see if I can keep the coolant where it is supposed to be without damaging the hose.

Interesting info gents.
I too thought that it was my rear main as that is the one that I have heard of most of the time. It is not leaking badly, but enough to leave a silver dollar sized splotch every couple of days.
I do not drive every day here at school, so I guess the sitting is not great.
Were the prices mentioned parts only, or dealer shop time?
Thanks, Adrian

What about just sticking a bolt in the hoses after clamping it down or is that not necessary. I would also like to know parts only prices and how to remove it. Someone said one large bolt and then it should come off or what. It seems to me, everytime I end up doing something, I end up getting out the hammer and sawzaw. Hope those two aren't necessary here. [ April 09, 2003, 10:11 PM: Message edited by: Sid's Toy ]

I replaced the outer oil cooler gasket on my 3.0 today. I bought both gaskets but I had a little trouble and ended up just putting the outer one in. I couldnt get the coolant lines to come off of the oil cooler. After being on their 10 years, they were not going to come off. Its a pretty cramped space that you have to work in. I just took the main center bolt out and another 14mm bolt that helps hold it to the block. The coolant lines had enough slack to let me turn the cooler around and remove the old outer gasket and install the new one in. I degreased everything in the engine bay and below. Hopefully after a few days I will know whether not I have a leak anymore.

Update. I'm still leaking. Its not the oil cooler though. It looks like its the driver's side valve cover gasket thats been giving me my trouble. It leaks right at the back, closest to the firewall. It runs down and gets on the transmission bell housing and on the engine oil pan. I guess I have something else to do now. Anybody know torque specs on the valve cover bolts?
