yeah the staging area is just outside murphy.. actually its like 10 miles outside.. but that's not much.

that'd be cool if you brought a cam. and a helmet cam would totally rock! although i think mounting it on the underbody would be out of the question!!! maybe on bumper up out of range.

stony-man,
it's at least a one hour drive from the McDonald's in Murphy to the second pay station (intersection of dirt road trail #1 and trail #6) ... i sometimes leave myself an hour and fifteen minutes to make the drive from Murphy to the trail head at this second pay station (take note that you pass the first pay station and begin riding on the dirt road trail #1, but it's still quite a ways to the second pay station, you can pay your $5 per vehicle per day at either station, but we'll be meeting at the second pay station near Stateline Campground at 9:00 am Saturday and Sunday, then we'll see who we have and what trail to hit first ... maybe even two groups if that's best)

with accommodations as you've described, i doubt you'll be lured into camping ... me, i like roughing it once in a while and do plan to camp out at Camp #3

stony-man, and others needing directions,

here's a link with detailed directions from Murphy or Sweetwater to Tellico (I've never tried to follow their directions from Sweetwater):

http://www.tellico4x4.com/murphy/trailinfo.htm#direct

Below I've [edited] what I remember were some points their directions from Murphy didn't mention:

From Murphy, NC- From the McDonalds in Murphy on Hwy 64/74, turn north onto Hiwassee St into [downtown] Murphy and go to the first traffic light. Turn left at light onto Tennessee St and leave town, the road becomes Joe Brown Hwy (there is a couple of places along here to buy gas) continue for 2.8 miles until you come to a blinking caution light [edit: notice the little country store on the far right corner]. Turn right at caution light [onto Hanging Dog Road] and continue for approx. 5.5 miles [when the road forks at one point go left across a small bridge in order to stay on Hanging Dog Road], then make a right turn onto Davis Creek Road. Pavement will end soon and the Forest Service entrance station will be on your left. Trail #1 starts here and continues through the ORV area and turns into River Road at the NC/TN state line

[It is a good hour's drive from Murphy to the trailhead at Tellico ORV Park, so be sure to leave enough time. You'll eventually come to a parking lot and a pay box that starts the Tellico ORV area, you can pay your $5 per vehicle fee here but don't wait here, go to the second paybox which is near Stateline Campground because this is the trail head and meeting point. Take a look at this map: http://cnc.4x4.org/images/tellico_map.gif . You'll be at the bottom of that map and you can see State Line Campground at the top, you must go north through the park to the other side. Take trail #1 for this. It's a good 15 to 20 minute drive. Even though its marked as a trail, its nothing more than a gravel road.]
