Anyone up for Haspin Acres (Indiana)? #1097287 01/16/06 09:33 AM

I know this is a bit early, but my friends and I would like to take a trip to Haspin Acres sometime late spring/early summer. We'd go to Badlands, but we like to finish the day off with some beer around the campfire...

I thought I'd throw this up here to see if anyone else would be interested, and also to see what dates we might be able to work out.

If your not familiar with Haspin Acres, go here.

We've never been to this park, so any input could prove very helpful.

Thanks!

I've got an '04 Tacoma, not sure which friends are going yet, but we kinda have a mix of everything.

Like I said, we probably wont take this trip until late spring/early summer. I'll get a better list of vehicles as the time nears.

Thanks for the interest!

Haspin is a good place to tinker around for a day, and camp overnight. I'll join you! There's a good chance of getting some Midwest Isuzu's and Bedford Boys to go, as well. I've made runs to Haspin with these groups last summer/fall.

Here's links for pictures:

Haspin is relatively small, but has creeks and some good hills; lots of it is forested, so there is plenty of shade on the hot sunny days. It doesn't have any rocks to speak of...except one wicked hill climb called "Devils Backbone"; but it is a hillclimb, and not really "crawling". There are severely rutted trails along the ridges and draws, so that makes it challenging--see the Samurai pictures here!

I got mixed feelings about Haspin. I go there every now and then, just to get a fix for wheeling. It's just a bunch of trees, ruts, hills, and mud. Did I mention trees? Theres lots of trees! If you have a small rig like a Jeep or a Sammy, you'll do pretty good. But a larger rig, even my 4Runner, has trouble back there. It kinda sucks having to navigate between trees when your buddies in Jeeps just cruise around them. The trails are VERY narrow too! And a 4Runner is not even a big truck. And if it hasnt rained in a few days, it's a dusty nightmare untill you get 10 minutes back in the woods where nobody else is. And when it does rain, its a muddy mess! And the mud back there is SLICK! Anything less than mud terrain tires and your going to be slipping and sliding!

But, its a 1.5 hour drive for me, and anything better is 3 hours or more, so I go there from time to time just to get muddy and wheel the 4Runner and quad a little. It's more fun to wheel the ATV though, as the trails are very narrow, and the whole tree thing!

Post up when you have a date set, I have a few buddies with Jeeps and ATV's, we'd love to go.

Sounds like we got some people who wanna go! Great!

I'll try to set a date with my friends at some point and I'll post it here.

BTW, is my '04 Taco XtraCab to big for the trails at Haspin?

Thanks!

Well, its a little long, but not too wide. You'll be doing a bunch of 20 point turns. It's worth a trip out there. I always meet some interesting people out there! The website says no alcohol or riding after dark, but we always do both when we go!

How far of a drive is it for you?

No kidding I made it out there for the first time last summer. The Amigo isn't all that wide and there were spots where I was going between trees and only had probably 3" of clearance on each side. Not a bad place to spend a day trailriding, though... and if you need a break, you can always sit for awhile and watch the 'influenced' rednecks tearing up their junk.

You doing good with 3" of clearance. Luckily my tires stick out past any body panel, so I scrub tires on trees instead of crunching body panels. I've put 2 dents on my truck back in that place, both were from running head on into trees! smile

Oh yea, no shortage of idiots flogging their junk. 90% of the time it has something to do with beer and trees.

Last time I was there a dude had to get a chainsaw and cut down a tree to get his rig unstuck.

When I had my 96 4Runner I got stuck on a huge downed tree and had to resort to the chainsaw as well!

I'd like to go back and do some more exploring. I use to go all the time with my buddies on quads, and we explored quite a few places, but the past handful of times I've only went on half the property, to the left of the main entrance. I think there's some better stuff to the right.

OK, we've decided on a date. How about the last weekend in April (28th-30th)?

We are planning on camping out Friday night, Play all day Saturday, go home on Sunday.

Hope this date is good for everyone!
