"underengineered" ... a strange thing for a new vehicle entering the 4x4 market.

By the way, Nissan must have pretty good experience with 4x4s: Nissan Patrol is a great vehicle (although, not in USA). They had to use the same engineers when the company was working on the new XTerra.
