That is the penultimate of evil. Satan himself shudders at the mere thought of a heaping helping oflima beans, yet alone EVIL lima beans.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Great, the more the merrier. I'm not entirely interested in Beasley Knob on this outing, but it's a cool trail so perhaps. This will be the maiden voyage of the rooftop tent, and until I know how tippy my rig will be I would like to avoid tougher areas. I found what appears to be some trails marked '4WD' on a couple of my maps, near Ellicott Rock Wilderness. I will continue to research this... [/quote]

No worries, I'm up for just about anything. It'd be good to stretch the Troop's legs again. I don't get out near as often as I'd like

I'm probably in on it.

How about camping somewhere up in the upper Tallulah river valley? 3-4 campgrounds, plus numerous unofficial sites, especially up Charlies Creek road across the ford just below Tate Branch.

Most of the "4wd only" roads on the FS maps aren't there any longer, or are jeep pit blocked.

Eddy,
I wouldn't mind camping back across the ford. Should be quiet way back in there. The area I'm scoping out is here...

http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat...=4&datum=nad27&layer=DRG

This is in the corner of NC, SC and GA. The link shows a part of the Tamassee topo. Chances are this trail is long gone, but it may be worth exploring if I can find mention of it somewhere on the web. It's also visible on my 2000 Chattahoochee National Forest map. Google Earth lists the road name as 'Hicking Trl' and it runs (at least) between Horse Cove Rd. and NF-646/Burrells Ford Road. This isn't too far East of Sarah's Creek, so I will try to get up there early and recon the area.

Here's the approx. halfway point along Hicking Trl:

34?58'58.64"N
83? 7'41.06"W

Enter into Google Earth and tilt the perspective, looks like a neat place to drive through.

Or Google Maps

Try me

It's time we find some new places look around...

If the group is small, how about camping on top of Rabun Bald? The "road" to the approach trail is a workout all by itself, and the 1/4 mile approach to the peak will make you sleep sound...

Or a downhill walk to Three Forks at the head of the West Chattooga off overflow road (1st north off Warwoman Rd going toward clayton). Or across the Chattooga from Burrels Ford campground is a good flat site about 200yds in.

Or how 'bout a leg workout and walk the Beech Creek loop around little Scaly Mtn west off Standing Indian ridge. 12mi and 2000' elevation change. Waterfalls. Chimney rock. Old "stamp" site in hanging valley. Scaly Mtn. corundum mine in the cliff face. End of Tallulah/Tate city road in NC.

I think old Burrels Ford road is still kind of there, but I don't think Hicking Cr is open.

Alternate is neat places without much wheeling. The Ball Crk road/Cherokee Cave/Picken's Nose/Albert Mtn fire tower and camp in the So. Nantahala Wilderness campground is another poss.

If we stay around Warwoman, MarkG might be able to make it and still stay in fire dept radio range.

Body Damage is Cool
"not looking for anything severe, just a ride through the woods and some good company somewhere in North Georgia"

Ned and three of his friends, Burt, Jon, and Ronnie had that same basic idea a few years ago. Do be careful, and listen out for banjo music headed your way in the darkness.

Walking up towards Blood Mountain on the AT to the branch off to the camping area in the dark. Sound of clumsy elephant coming downtrail. 300+lb Bubba comes into headlamp view, mumbling to himself and eating peach halves from a gallon can with a carving fork. You can smell him before you see him, and wish you could do neither. He's gumming the peaches down because his teeth are sticking out of the bib pocket of his overhauls beside the neck of a bottle with a tax stamp still on it. Hat says "I Like It RAW"...

He wants us to "foller me back up da hill and help my big brother who's skeered of the dark"...

Handed him my minimaglight and declined further assistance. Afraid I'd become a midnight snack. Told him he'd never find us in the dark and just keep the light...

And I won't ride in a canoe with a guy with a guitar OR a bow and arrow. And I can show you some of the spots where they filmed Ned and Jon and Burt and Ronnie, and some of the banjo player's kin in Lakemont or Tiger. Did you know the banjo player had an idiot brother???

All right, trip's off!

Squeal, squeal like a pig!

Well, wherever I end up camping it's going to need to be flat spot big enough for my rig . I like the idea of camping across the water crossing near Tate City. Rabun Bald is also fine, though we will quickly run out of space for the vehicles and tents if more than 4 or 5 vehicles go.

I enjoyed the area around Albert Mountain, that's fine by me too and if we can camp up in the hills we may find it relatively cool...maybe? Do we know for sure that MarkG is on call that weekend (or is it every weekend?). Where's he been anyway?
