You can use a non-jet head with mechanical or hydraulic lifters.
Balance shaft delete is possible, but rattled my Max's Starion engine apart.
The 2.6L engine is rather small for most 4-bbl carbs, smallest I've ever seen or read about is about 350 cfm. Most folks that don't want the Mikuni variants use a Weber.
FI from a Starion is likely the easiest non-carb swap. But, plenty of Magna intake systems and custom pieces are available. Look up Starion boards or get on MitsuNation on FB.

http://fitechefi.com/default.asp.pg-GoEFISystem4-InjectorKitThis is the fuel injection setup I have in mind. I had a weber carb 36dgev on it for about a year but I took my truck off the road to get allot done on it and have the engine rebuilt by a knowledgeable shop. Thanx for your input man!

Also on the Mitsubishilinks.com page there is a manual (or two) on hopping up the 2.6. Check that out
