I just did a transmission flush on my 97 montero sr. Fluid looked terrible but I've never had a problem with the transmission.
The car has 170k miles on it, is my daily driver ( 6 miles one way to work) and my off roader ( maybe once a month with serious trails)
I want to have bigger tires for off roading but dont want to strain the transmission and differentials unnecessarily, or kill my gas milage. so am considering getting a set that i put on for just off roading, but could still drive on the road 100 miles to my off road destinations. How big of a tire can one fit with out serious modifications?
Im open to body and suspension lifts if they are plug and play. I want to do the ome suspension upgrade, but i think it only adds and inch if you have an ls, not a rs. it also seems that a 1-2inch body lifts can be performed with no real modifications as well.
it seems like an old man emu upgrade, and 1inch body lift will fit 38's but im not positive. I saw on this form someone with 40's but not sure what lift was required. If im going to have separate tires i want them to be bigger than 35's but dont want to set my cars drive train up for a short life.

Is your SR got the rear locker? Do you have a lunchbox or something similiar in the front? You have to understand fitting that big of tire is going to kill your gas mileage. Period. That is simple physics. Guys here have done all kinds of trails (Rubicon, Moab, etc) on 35's, what are you expecting to need that big of a tire for? I know down here in soggy wet Florida tires like that are handy, but 35's have done the Mitsubishi mark well without risking drivetrain damage the leverage that bigger tires can do.

I addressed various aspect of this question in your first post about tire size.
Where in OR are you. I'll be in K-Falls the remainder of the week if you want to chat.
The chap with the idea of 40s could never deliver, and would not meet with me, though I lived in the area.

The chap with the idea of 40s could never deliver, and would not meet with me, though I lived in the area. Im in tigard outside of portland. 3. Unless you're going to rock crawl this Montero, or expect to fit 35" up tires, there is no need to worry about the suspension. At this point, remember about the differences between want and need. I want to fit 35+ so a suspension lift and body lift are going to happen. Is an OME upgrade taller than an RS or just an LS. the " 1.25" upgrade has me worried... I understand how to make 35s fit, but what if you try to fit 36's where do they rub? how about 38s? looks like they make a 38x12.50x15 I know a bigger tire will kill gas millage thats why im considering having a set of tires that i put on before i hit the road to the trails.

Yes with the rear locker ( love it) not sure what a lunchbox is. I know it will kill gas milage and be alot harder on my drive train, thats why i want to get a set of tires i only put on for roading. And if they are speacial use tires why not go as big as possible. I would like to try and make it up the waterfall at browns camp, tillamook forest, oregon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_2rrSmyLYo

Time for you to look up CAP510. His 94 SR has a 3" body lift, cranked t-bars, and 37" tires. That is maxed out before going SAS and solid axle in front.

I spent some time around RockStomper back in the day when he was trying to reverse the laws of physics. He put in a lot of time and effort trying to successfully run 40+ tires on CVs. He ran CV joints from a lot of different manufacturers with little success. I've been around the racers over the years who've also tried this. Never works out in the long run. 37s & 38s if you don't push them too hard will work for a while. 40s just don't last. Edward

Well now there's RCV and that's the strongest joint on the market currently, so CV's can't hang is no longer a true statement. Now the serious crawlers are ditching their U-joints for CV's and nobody would have expected that 10 years ago. we're talking Dana 60, Rockwell and Mercedes 2.5 ton axles as well to give you an idea. Just expect to spend the money on RCV's and expect the weak link to be moved elsewhere. Hopefully someday they'll make a set for Montero's

On stock Montero axles run 35's and be pretty good in the reliability zone, 37's push it a bit. More than that you need to get some CV's cryo treated and micro polished or convince RCV to make Montero CV's.

If im going to have separate tires i want them to be bigger than 35's but dont want to set my cars drive train up for a short life. As has been noted 35's are the max for the minor mods you've mentioned unless you don't mind the lack of low range required for bigger tires. Anything bigger really needs 4.9 r&p gears and if possible Aussie x-case gears. That said 37's will need a 3" BL and likely require "clearancing" your fenders as CAP510 did. Again anything bigger is not really advisable unless you upgrade the drivetrain to handle lower R&P gears (i.e. axle swaps with other 4x4's with the front pumpkin on the correct side). How serious are you to make this happen... i.e. how much are you willing to spend?
