Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum and I know close to nothing about cars/trucks, so sorry if this doesn't make a lot of sense or if this question has been asked before.

I have an 89 Dodge Raider with a bad power steering pump. I've taken it to a local mechanic, and he basically told me that he can't help me because none of the local auto parts stores have the correct pump for it. So I ordered a pump online, and he said that its still the wrong pump.

My question is: Is there a special power steering pump for a Raider that nobody makes anymore? Or is there a way to modify the wrong pump to fit? Or should I just take my Raider somewhere else? Maybe these guys just don't know much about Raiders so they're not able to replace the pump.

Any info about this topic would be much appreciated.

Is your truck a 4 cyl or 6 cyl?

I can't recall the last time I heard of a power steering pump going bad. You should be good with any of the used pumps. Though I would flush some clean fluid through the pump before I installed it in my rig.

First, yes, take it somewhere else. Then, like MarkG asked, what engine is in it? What is wrong with the new pump? Pictures?

Sorry, its a 6 cyl. Apparently all the pumps they can find have an extra port on them that nothing plugs into. I ended up taking it to a different mechanic, and he said the extra port is for a brake system that my car doesn't have. Hes trying to find the right part now.

That is so incorrect. I also have an 89 V6 5spd. According to the FSM, a sensor goes in there on vehicles that are equipped with the Automatic. I forgot what exactly it does. I had gotten a new pump also, and ran into the same issue. I had to get the plug off an Eclipse (?) and plugged that hole right up.

Power steering pumps don't break down? In my 1989 Raider, V6, 5sp, when I turn the steering all the way left or right, the idle becomes erratic (800-1200 rpm) and then the vehicle stalls when I step on the accelerator.

A growling sound comes from the front of the engine when I step on the accelerator and the sound becomes worse as the RPMs rise.

Is this not a bad power steering pump? The power steering gearbox looks pretty bad, too as the boot is torn and the gearbox leaks as evidenced by how covered it is in grease.

Raises the engine speed when making turns I believe.

I got out of the FSM that is some type of temperature sensor that turns on the temp light. I tried following the wiring diagram for it, but it's a PITA to follow the FSM wiring diagram on my phone.
