So I still have my 2001 Sport. Still working out the rest of my lift. Had tabled it for the time being till some information came out.
Its come to my attention via another sport owner that there are similarities in the coil spring diameters between the sport and full size Montero. Enough that he swapped in a set from a 98 full size Montero. It fit and lifted his sport. He says the Montero coil springs offer similar lift properties to OME kit when installed on a Sport. Also the same with a torsion bar swap. The full size Montero "sport version" had beefier torsions. Again these fit. This is awesome news if I can find the right Full-size at the junkyard. He pulled coils and torsions from a 98 with a locker rear I believe w/ 4 doors, so a LWB? I also believe there was mention of there being the 3.5. I gathered the info across a few threads, but parts may have been pulled from multiple vehicles. I asked about coil wire dimensions to verify before I pulled, but to no avail. I don't have a full size manual to verify the info. He did post the torsion diameters, so I'm set there.
SO my question becomes what variations are there in the gen 2 coil springs and torsion bars. I have been searching and have gotten spotty info with no real mention of differences to parts across the years and models.
I saw mentioned a 97-99 winter package that eluded to a taller stance? Maybe the SWB versus the LWB has stiffer coils and torsions? or the 3.5 versions?
Please if you can help verify what I need to look for. I guess I need to verify what gen 2 trim level and years would carry the strongest coils and torsions. Matching the coil diameter of a 98.
If I can consolidate the vehicles that will match the criteria, there might be a budget lift for coiled sports!
