If I get my hands on one definitely, I've only made one set of sliders for a Gen 1 before and it was a long long time ago but they turned out nice. I'll keep you posted, if I get a local to go for a set of bumpers and sliders I can just make a double order and you'll be set.

I pulled the skids off the Gen 3 to be drawn up in solidworks and a trans skid designed for both Gen 2 and 3 (not sure why Mitsubishi left those out.

I have not looked to compare, but y'alls think any of the trans skids from the Gen I Montero fit the Gen 2 Max? I'm having a lazy moment.

Would you have pic of end product for the GEN I sliders? Yeah for real, my underbody guards are rough and greasy. Was thinking i'd just contract a proficient to make some diamond plate guards to the Gen 1 specs. Gen 1 4G54b 2.6l that is mounted to a 5 speed manual KM145 can be pulled and replaced with a wideblock 6 bolt 4G64 block with no bellhousing mods or any other save for electrical and fuel adaptations. I'm Working on a 4G64 2.4l block + 4G63 DOHC cylinder head. The cylinder head will need to be cleverly layed out as the RWD orientation of it conflicts with the firewall of the Gen 1 (so I've heard) then again I am lifting the body 2" so maybe not. How about a AC compressor to engine powered compressed air and tank on board for the Gen 1? It'd be truck-ception as you could take apart the truck with the truck using pnuematic tools. What about a Gen 1 underbody drawer system/underbody armor? like two drawers of equal width between the wheels on the driver side and the passenger side. Put supplies for whatever in em, tools even. Ball bearing drawers similar to tool box kind. What about a tube storage system mounted to the back spare tire bracket? It could be circular or square. the square idea would hold 9 pvc tubes for storage. The tubes could even be modded for specific use as in one tube could be for water storage or as a cooler. make a simple valve at the bottom to drain out water. The tops could be threaded to easily screw off a cap to the tube. I think of this idea as a 'missle pod' or pods kinda rack. Alternative gauges would be nice cosmetically as well. My ideas tend to apply mostly to the Gen 1 as that's what I own and am building.

It'd be really great if there were performance and durability minded transmission upgrades for the km145 or transfer case as well. The tuff pan is great but surely more could be made. Hell if it's not made by the time I'm done with my motorsports engineering degree I'll see what I can figure out and model on solidworks and ansys

The Gen 1 alternator puts out I think 50 amps? Its poopy low though compared to modern alts that put out the 150 amp range (im pretty sure) Daisy chained 2-3 batteries secured down in the back of the truck and wired up to solar panels on either side of it. Throw in a hard switch to bridge the power and it could suffice to start the truck in a bad spot or power auxiliary stuff like a TV or a raspberry pi mini computer.
Mini computer like a raspberry pi might also be helpful and efficient for use as an mpfi, efi. Id really like to have one for this purpose as its way way less expensive and more powerful then oem ecu's or that instrument gauge box. It would even be possible to have a setup using a mini computer to just watch the engine operations and have is own freak out signal when it has a measurement like oil pressure drop lower then a set value or higher. The possibilities could really be endless with a mini computer on board

I'll look into alternators, I know which ones to swap onto the 3.0 but I haven't had a 4 cylinder rig in a while. I think IncorporatedX has a mini computer something or other in the works.

I can't speak to the Gen 1, but I know the Gen 2s (6G74) can use alternators from the 2003-2006 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.5L since it's basically the same engine and those alternators are 120 amps vs the "stock" 85 amps.
Regarding Bumpers maybe making adapters so that you can use commonly available bumpers from other vehicles like Cherokees or similar sized vehicles would be a good offering, for both front and rear.
If I get my '94 SR running again I'd be looking for bumpers, winch mounting, dual-battery mount and some roof rack options.

Aluminum drawers in a box, same height as wheel humps, drilled to bolt to factory seat and tie-down threaded holes. bolt tiedowns to the top. Allow for optional plywood deck to go all the way across. maybe a hi-lift mount on the side, it'll fit between the box and the fender.
Oh, how about a bracket that replaces the idler pulley on the 2.6 and fits up a York compressor and a belt tensioner? Or just a blank bracket with a centered shaft hole and base holes/slots to adjust alignment.

Hello everyone, I am new to this forums but also sort of new to the history of the Mitsubishi Montero. It was back in 2002 or so when I first stopped and looked into the great shapes and beauty of these SUVs and started imagining myself driving a lifted 4x4 Montero out into freedom from work and family issues even if it was for just a few hours or a few days.. Today I own 3 different Monteros; a 2001 XLS, a 2003 20th Anniversary edition and a 2001 Limited that I bought for parts. I guess my question has to do with how does my two categories of models fall into the GEN1, GEN2 and GEN3 and mostly related to parts porting from one to the other? Right now as far as keeping building my 2003 I've been thinking about looking for a newer engine from any car that uses the 3.8L engine as is the case of the 2003-2006. Other than the size of the engine or the ECU comparability what else should I be looking for? I have also an option of bringing this car to Mexico and make an engine swap from one of the newer 2011 or 2015 newer Monteros but I am pretty sure I am getting into more trouble than I want to handle just to get a newer engine with less miles on it. Again, I want to use this Montero to do a lot of things to it but if the engine keeps doping oil and has all these vacuum noises and even worse the lack of power you need to go full off road, what gives?
Sincerely,
Dos~Equiz

Welcome to the Wire, What you have are Gen3. All the versions before yours are body on frame with a solid rear axle on trailing arms, well Leaf springs for the Gen1 4cyl that we first got in the early '80s. The front suspension is double arm with torsion bars, steering is old school recirculating ball rather than the rack & Pinion as you have. Basically, they are trucks.
As you know your two early ones have a 3.5L engine, 4 speed auto with 4.9 gear ratio. Your 2003 has the 3.8L, 5 speed auto and 4.3 gear ratio.
Parts from the previous Monteros or it's cousin the Montero Sport have very little compatibility.
In the Gen3 there was a period with failing head gaskets with the 3.5 engine, that supposedly was cured on the 3.8, but then the intake has "butterfly valves" which are prone to failing and have a rather long history of doing so. Just removing the vacuum line from the actuator will disable them to the open position and all but eliminate the possibility of failure. The swap to the 4th gen engine will require a wire harness change as well, not necessarily easy for most people. Not to mention compatibility with US emission test might not be easy.
In country engines, the car 3.8L engines have higher compression and provide more power. The engine block has some differences where the mount brackets attach which with the alloy brackets on the Gen3 may be a bit frustrating since not all bolt positions are cast into the block. It can be done though. The factory ECU can be programmed as needed but not sure how hard to find a tuner.

One thing to add here, one simple thing that might be worth the effort is to swap a set of the 4.9 differentials into your '03. Not sure if either of you early ones have the limited slip in them or not.

All of my suggestions will be for the gen 1, since that's what I'm driving and know about.
I'd love to see custom guages available for the middle cluster on the Gen 1s - or at least replacements - someone took my inclinometer before I bought mine so there's just a missing spot on my guage cluster where it should be - and I can't find anything to fit exactly but I really want to have my inclinometer.
I'd also like a revised middle console to make a little better use of that space and extend the top door/pad out a little bit.
Third - I think the trailer hitch is available but they seem hard to find - something to replace that standard shackle (i know they recalled the factory hitch but that still doesn't help me hook up to a ball hitch)
Fourth - a manual lock on the back door that you can retrofit on the automatics - it's annoying that when that actuator or relay goes out, you don't have a way to lock the back door because they hid the mechanism behind the door panel.
Fifth - auto hub replacements - it's great that I can swap them out for a manual hub but what if i want to keep my auto locking setup that came factory? Right now I'm SOL if it breaks.
Sixth- third row stow seats for the gen 1 would be nice - like they had for the gen 2 and for the really early non-U.S. gen 1 pajeros.
Seventh - reproductions of the Gen 1 seat mounts and adjustment hardware. If anything breaks on these, you're pretty much SOL since they don't make em anymore and you can't find them in junkyards anymore either. I would pay $300-$400 per seat to have the seat suspension experience that I would have gotten from the factory. Someone took the mechanical adjustment pieces from my driver seat before I bought mine and just left me with the mounting frame and sadness for what could have been every time I get in the seat.
eight - BUT THIS SHOULD BE FIRST!!! PLEASE MAKE REPAIR PATCHES FOR THE REAR END OF THE FRAME RAILS!!!!! they make them for all of the other 4x4 suvs from this era EXCEPT mitsubishi - and we rust just the same way 80's toyotas do. Why are we left out of the frame repair game?!?!?

Nix on the manual lock comment (#4) on my previous reply - I didn't see a manual locking mechanism on my back door because someone in it's past removed it - so where the little slider should have sat was just the plate it attaches to. They also conveniently removed the sticker that would have said "lock/unlock" with the arrows to ensure nobody would suspect there should be lock mechanism there. So no need to create a retro fit back lock - I just needed to fix mine.
