Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a wobbly crank pulley. When I tried to turn the bolt to remove it, the bolt was somewhat loose. I got the bolt about half way out but must be hitting a bad spot on the threads because it got tight and now I am turning the engine. How can I lock the engine so that I can remove the difficult bolt?

The other methods in here talk about locking the pulley. That doesn't help me because engine turns w/o the pulley. Surely there is a way to block the engine or transmission for the removal of the bolt. I may need the same method for torquing since I dont know where to find that special tool to lock the crank pulley.

Any help really appreciated.

Ken

Try removing the transmission bellhousing inspection cover and block the ring gear. Fill the pistons with air using a manifold and air through the spark plug holes...this is not a serious suggestion. Can't think of any other methods, short of air tools.

i use a chain wrench on the pulley to stop everything from moving. be sure to use a section of old fan belt in the groove to avoid damage.

Would an impact wrench (air or electric) work? Maybe it could back the bolt out without causing the crank and pistons to rotate.

I had to lock it from the can gear using a rope.
