Getting the Wheeling Fever
So I'm getting around to rebuilding my montero. While I have a great rolling chassis, I will be on my 3rd engine (2.6) now. I'd really like to keep this one for a while as finding donor motors is getting hard in my parts.
So I'd like suggestions as to best rebuild tips/parts as I'm taking my newest donor motor down for a rebuild.
ARP studs? copper head gasket?? clearwater non jet head?
Let me know where to put my money.
it will be a stock 88 SWB 4banger to an auto tranny.

Sheldon

I'd still follow all the various applicable sections of the Turbo Bible, or:

Build a 2.4L, the 4G64.

Thanks, good call on the turbo bible section, I'll give that a go. Itll stay the 2.6 for now. I take the block to a hot tank this am.

Well my rebuild is going well, bone stock for simplicity of parts. ordered a weber today. I'm done with vacuum lines. have 3 carbs none run worth a damn. not cheap to my neck of the woods but that's the cost for piece of mind.
waiting on balance shaft bearings and the block can go together. itll be good to get another gen 1 on the road again. Thanks Dave I'll keep those in mind!

Well my balance shaft bearings finally made it over the border, I put one into the block and I'd be dammed of the shaft would fit. I tried the other bearing by hand on the shaft and it too was very tight. FSM shows oil clearance should be big enough to throw a cat through so I'm not sure why it's so tight.
Is it possible I need to team or hone these to size? they are oddly 1 pc solid bearings unlike the split bearings I pulled out.

Any ideas are appreciated, otherwise itll be another week and a half from rock auto.

There is a PDF on MitsubishiLinks.com on getting the most performance from the 2.6. Might be worth checking out while you're doing the rebuild.
