Hi Randii, I just got this knife this weekend, I can't tell you how much I like it (Aaron got one for his pop too) This one is pretty slick too: It's a Kershaw, model: K.O. Leek, Stainless (comes in different colors too). The ambidextrous opening Kershaw Leek designed by Ken Onion was awarded Blade Magazines Overall Knife of the Year in 2002. This slim and stylish knife features the SpeedSafe assisted opening mechanism that enables the Leek to be opened quickly using either the ambidextrous thumb stud or the index finger flipper.
A framelock mechanism locks the blade into position after the blade is deployed. All Leek models have handles that are drilled for both tip-up and tip-down clip carry. A safety lock provides added security to assure that the blade will not deploy while clipped in pocket.
Specifications Blade Length: 3" (7.5cm) Blade Steel: 440A Stainless Steel titanium oxide coated Blade Thickness: Overall Length: 7" (Open) Closed Length: 4" (10.3cm) Handle Material: 410 Stainless steel titanium oxide coated Lock Type: Framelock Weight: 3.0
Titanium-Oxide (coating) Titanium oxide is a low temperature PVD film that is durable and decorative. The rainbow colors are the result of applying electrical currents of different intensities to the titanium oxide. Just one-half micron thick, it offers tough, ceramic like wear properites and is scratch resistant.
What is Speed Safe? It is the patented, assisted opening system built into many of Kershaw's best selling Ken Onion knives. Speed Safe assists the user to smoothly open the knife with a manual push on the blade's thumb stud or Index open system. The Index Open uses a protruding portion of the blade's finger guard to give the uses an alternate to the thumb stud. The user manually pulls back on the protrusion with the index finger to open the blade.
The heart of the Speed Safe system is its torsion bar. Closed, the torsion bar helps keep the knife closed, preventing it from being opened by gravity. In order to open the knife, the user must apply manual pressure to the thumb stud to overcome the resistance of the torsion bar. After the blade is out of the handle, the torsion bar moves along its half moon track and takes over. The blade opens smoothly and locks into position. It's a spring assisted self opening knife, it's hard to see there, but basically it is a switch blade without the switch, thus making it legal. It's small, lightweight and comes with a reversible clip. P.S. Don't go to the site that I posted the pic from unless you have a good antivirus. (Ya I know... I can pick the sites) P.S.S. If your ever at a gun show, keep an eye out for "The Knife Girl" she travels as far west as Cali. P.S.S.S. My roomate works at sears (I've been looking for some ratcheting wrenches! Gonna have to pick up a set for myself). Peter
