I have an '02 Rodeo, 3.2L with roughly 26Kmi. I use about 3/4qt. of oil every 3000mi. I just had it to the dealer for this to find out what was going on. I've never had a "Japanese" built engine use any oil. They told me it was normal. I find this hard to believe.
Speaking of oil, what kind of mileage intervals do most of you use for oil changes? My manual states 7500mi. All my previous vehicles typically ran the usual 3K-4Kmi interval. My wifes Volvo also states a 7500mi change interval. Have engine designs changed/improved that much?

WElcome to the board. The dealer isn't just "feeding you a line". They may be feeding you the corporate line, but it's not a dealer thing in this case.
If you ask enough people on the board, that amount of consumption seems to be average. For some people, the consumption gets less over time. Where does the oil go? I'd be interested in finding out. It doesn't seem to be harming anything, so.... I've just learned to live with it. The motor is still pretty tight. I've chalked it up to be one of those "characteristic quirks" of the Isuzu motor.
As for the changes in oil change intervals, motor tolerances have gotten much better over the years. I'm sure oil engineering has gotten better over the years, as well. I still stick with the 3k change interval (even with synthetic oil) just b/e I'm kind of anal (understatement there) and because I drive my truck hard.
Again, welcome to the board.

I'm with you, in that I've not had any other Japanese engine use oil either - but then again, these were all 4 banger car engines. My 2002 has about the same oil use rate as yours, but I havenÆt owned it long enough yet to experiment with different oils & viscosities + I only have 11Kmi on it. As far as the 7500mi drain interval goes, I'm not sure I'd go that long - especially with conventional (non-synthetic) oil. Most conventional oils turn into some nasty stuff in under 5000 miles of use. As you have probably seen in other posts, Isuzu wont do anything for you unless your truck uses more than one quart of oil in 1000 miles. G/luck Joel

Dave & Joel, Thanks for the welcome, and thoughts on oil change intervals.
I did forget to mention in my original post that I do know where my oil is going. It is being burned. A couple weeks ago my father-in-law was behind the Rodeo when I started it. He ask if I was burning oil, the exhaust had blue smoke in it. It wasn't enough that could be seen from inside the vehicle, and it shortly disipated and cleared. It only makes sense that it is being burned if you know you don't have any leaks.
Thanks again! I'll probably be posting a question or two later on since I'm having difficulity locating some parts. Rich
