Shock Absorber Advice; Gen II Rodeo #122960 05/29/03 05:56 AM

Hello,
I'm looking for advice or pointers on where to find shocks for my '02 Rodeo. I recently replaced my rear springs with a set from Valley Spring Works in Dixon, CA. I love the springs and also gained a 2" suspension lift in the deal. Of course I cranked the torsion bars up 2" to match and level out the ride height. Problem is now when the Rodeo goes over anything with a faintly sudden terrain shift, it tries to knock the bottom-end of the shocks out.

I'm having difficulity finding replacement shocks for it. I tried calling a couple local shops, but no one even list a stock replacement shock for anything beyond a '98. I tried calling Rancho, but the so called "Tech" guy I spoke to must have been an ex-Autozone employee; worthless! Tried finding a number or website for Procomp, but am not having any luck here either. Even the Isuzu dealer didn't have any stock shocks I could look at to take measurements off of, so I'll need to unbolt mine just to measure the minimum and maximum travel of the stockers.

If anyone has already been through this, or has had an easier time of it and would like to make any suggestions, I'll all ears.
Thank you,
Rich - Ashburn, VA

Rancho Shock Specs

Match up what you'd buy for stock so you can get the mounting codes for the upper and lower. Then, figure out something that has the same mounts, just longer travel. Ask to see the book...

...and make sure they have a good return policy. I went through 4 sets of rear shocks before I found what a needed. They just kept swapping them out for me (John's 4x4 in Boulder, CO).

The only other shocks I've had when I had a 2.5" lift were the Calmini shocks included with the kit. I wish I still had the part no's off of those - sorry...

Need a Spot
I have been looking for shocks for a 2002 Rodeo, too. No listings for a 2002 are to be found at shockwarehouse.com, monroe.com, SHOX.com, a-1shocks.com, skyjacker.com, doetsch-shocks.com, explorerprocomp.com, rough.roughcountry.com, shockshopusa.com, etc, etc, etc.

The only listings I did find are here:

Gabriel:
http://armlva.arvinmeritor.com/shoc...Make=ISUZU&Model=RODEO&Year=2002

And here:

Carquest:
http://www.carquest.com/carquest_VO...Cwwwroot%5Ccarq%5Chtdocs%5Cshocks%2Ehtml

The Carquest shocks are made by Gabriel. Both are so new you may have to have them "special ordered".

Good luck

Roll Me Over
I am going to move this to the Talk Forum. The topic seems to fit better there than in the Tech Forum.

Piece of cake...

Rancho 9000 series shocks...

Front - 9136
Rear - 9179

Not a DIRECT fit, but close enough. That's what I have had for 3+ years now...

I believe that 9136 cannot fit bottom socket
without mods.

1. Go to the nearest Sears.
2. Make special order of Rancho 9000X shocks:

RS99214 front
RS99179 rear

They will find these shocks in their book
for Rancho. These shocks are listed for
different vehicles (older Isuzus) but they
are direct and perfect fit for the
II gen Rodeo. I have them for couple months
and I love them. They are somewhat pricey
but they are tunable, comfortable and very
stable on rocks. See http://www.gorancho.com.
Sears will deliver them in 3-4 days.

3. Spend several hours, install them yourself
and have a fun.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I really appreciate it!

A couple questions for clairification. Regarding the suggested replacement shocks, are those part numbers for stock replacements? Remember, I have lifted the suspension 2". I can probably still use a stock replacement on the front since the travel is limited by the top & bottom bump stops, or would it still be better to go with a slightly longer shock? The rears definetly need to be longer.
Thanks again,
Rich
