Putting the tranny in gear may work with a manual, but not with an automatic.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using an impact wrench, but I don't have any experience with impact wrenches regarding torqueing to spec. Even though I do have an impact wrench, I hardly use it. I'm more a hand tools kind of guy.
