Well, like I said, I was a Marine.

I went in to see the recruiter the day after the barracks in Beiruit was bombed (October 23) and signed up on December 6th, 1983 (at the ripe old age of 16).

Went to MCCCES, 29 Palms and came out as a 2531, Field Radio Operator. Reported to duty with the FMF, 1st Marine Amphibious Brigade, Kaneohe Marine Air Station, Kaneohe, Hawaii, where I volunteered for duty with A Co., 3 Recon Bn., 3rd Marine Division, and got OJT for 0321 (Reconnaissance Marine).

After that, I transferred over to 1/12, Artillery and worked the Forward Command Center and spotting until discharged, Aug. 24, 1988 as an E-4. My reserve contract expired 12/5/89.

Nothing quite like calling in a full strike of White Phosphorus and HE, 155mm rounds from the M-198s to celebrate the 4th of July in the middle of nowhere And, if you ever get a chance to work with the Australians for explosives training, do it. They are a blast (!) to work with.

It was a great experience for me, taught me a lot about myself. I went to a bunch of schools, but the one that I got upset they didn't send me to was BUDS (Basic Underwater Demolition); pretty much the first 4 months of SEAL school. I trained for about 6 months to get physically ready, and they sent a newbie that had been with the unit for two weeks instead. You know, thats probably the biggest reason I didnt re-enlist. Oh yeah, that and breaking my neck in bootcamp didn't help. Only took the Navy doctors 3 years to figure that one out.

Kevin

IÆm the consummate government employee. I've done 16 years military.
- 4 years active duty (all bases that are gone now)
- 12 years at various Guard units (and constantly back on active duty)
ò 5 years Air National Guard Technician (i.e. Civil Servant in a military uniform)
ò 6 years government contractor (Texas Inst Defense and now Raytheon)
- 11 Enlisted
- 5 Officer
ò 11 years Crew Chief on FB-111, KC-135, and C-130
ò 4 years Civil Engineer (general "Build it or blow it up" gruntùAir Force version of SeeBee)
ò 1 year Disaster Prep (The old Nuke, Bio, Chem warfare guys before the name was PC'ed)

4 years to retirement? That's so weird. When I first joined, the only guys near their 20 year mark were all these old fogies. I don't see any of them now, just guys like me.
We'll see what happens when the 20 comes up; if I'm still getting called up 4-6 months a year (the pattern for the last 6 years) I'll get out. If it's more manageable, I'll stay in.

Joined the Navy in Feb. 1993. Spent 5 years on the USS Emory S. Land (AS-39), then another 3 years aboard the USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC-20). I'm now on shore duty at Naval Base Norfolk going to Johnson & Wales University. I should have my culinary arts degree in June of 2004.
I'm approaching 10 years active duty this Feb, but after I get my degree I don't know if I'll stick it out to 20 for retirement... too much politics any more.

I have to admit that I kinda miss it. I was just following my dad's footsteps. He's a Vietnam vet.

Body Damage is Cool
1981-2001 US Army (Active)
Combat Engineer
Military Police (Dog Handler), (SRT)
Recruiting
Airborne & Air Assault
Finished up as the First Sergeant of the Salt Lake Recruiting Company and as ironic as it may seem I'm now sitting in the same desk, in the same position, only as a total civilain now. Go figure. Hence my comment up getting lip service every day. It always never seemed to amaze me that the ones the cry the loudest about pertecting our freedoms run the fastest (in the opposite direction) when approached by a recruiter. OK, I'm better now. It's been one of those Mondays. My hats off to all that serve in one capacity or another at any time. I'm just glad I had the opportunity to do my part.

Should make First Sergeant this month.

My three kids will be in it to one day. They just don't realize it yet.

Let me try.

3 years Army Reserve Combat Engineer(Indiana)
32 weeks specialized training(Booby traps,Demo)
1 year Transfer MOS to 77F(Gas Pumper)to get to the Persian Gulf.

My Engineer unit(A co. 972nd Eng. BN)didn't get to go to Saudi Arabia so I voluntered to go with a unit from Scottsburg Indiana(417th QM)to get there. On a side note...The goverment still owes me 4 ribbons that were never put on my 214 and I am still ticked. At some point I should get off my duff and go to the VA and talk with them about getting them....I earned them I should have them.
Curious if this has happened to anyone else?

missing:
Secondary MOS
Overseas Service
