Dash Lights following new Alt??? #136252 11/11/02 05:22 PM

After reading lots of interesting info on past issues with alternators, I wanted a litte confirmation. My brother just repalaced his Alt with an autozone rebuild (96 Rodeo). Following the replacement, battery, 4x4, and another (dont remember)dash light are on. The Rodeo is running, but from what I have read I'm just waiting for alt to completely die or screw up something else.

Is factory/Oem the only true fix for this. Let us know

Thanks,

Tim B.

I had the same problems with rebuilt ones, so I went to a salvage yard, $60 for one with a 30 day warranty on it.

you may want to try disconnecting the battery for awhile and it should rest the computer. If something is wrong the lights will just come back on. Whenever I get some dash light thats usually the first thing i do.

We ended up pulling the alt, checks out fine. what about the battery cables, could these be causing some problems with keeping the battery charged???

Thanks for the other ideas, we'll try those too.

I dont know about the wires...for them to be the source of your troubles they'd have to be Extremly dank! If they look to be in decent condition chances are they're fine. You can always try replacing them, cant hurt.

I bet that third one was the brake indicator light, wasn't it?

And how do I know? --- Well... Tonight, while returning home from a long trip, all three of mine came on too, but then they soon went back off again.

Miss Kathy and I were still about 45-minutes from home when it happened. --- We'd made it almost all of the way back before I noticed something else... I asked her if she thought the headlights were alternating between dim and bright. --- At first she said it was just me, but soon after, she agreed that they really were sort of flickering.

At the time, with only a couple of miles left to go, the voltmeter was fine, however, this didn't last much longer.

We were about a mile from home (after traveling about 300 to 350-miles today) when the voltmeter suddenly dropped to 12-volts. --- At the same time, all three of those dash-warning lights came back on, and the headlights dimmed to about 50% brightness.

We made it home, but now I guess I'm looking at having to replace my alternator... and it's not like we haven't already charged-up a veritable fortune in the last few months, all of it in the name of repairing this XXXXXXX thing.

Between this and the tire problem I'm having (split belts/completely un-balanceable), I'm actually beginning to worry if I'm gonna make it to Uwharrie.

YES... I know... I should be thankful that we made it all of the way home, but this really sucks guano! --- I swear; try as I might, it's like I just can't ever seem to stay ahead of all of the repairs anymore!

A junkyard alternator, huh? --- THANKS! --- I'll have to look into that possibility.

But let's assume that I can't find one... I already know how much Isuzu thinks of theirs (Read as: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ !!!), so are there any other viable options?

I'm really sorry for re-hashing this thoroughly covered ground, but even using the search feature, for the life of me, I just can't seem to find the links that I'm hunting. --- Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

TIA

I know this is probably just wishful thinking, but I awoke this morning with the notion that all of those vibrations that were coming from the tires might have shaken something loose… I might be looking for something as simple as a disconnected wire or some such.

I haven’t even had my morning coffee yet, so I may not have thought this one all of the way through… but at the moment, it at least seems possible.

Monday morning, I was planning on taking the old bucket of bolts over to a neighboring town to have the tire problem addressed by an unbiased (no pun intended!) tire place. --- The local one is giving me a huge run-around, and not owning-up to the fact that they sold me yet another defective set. --- But now it looks like the alternator just took the number one spot on my priority list.

Cheers!

Just for info, why don't you guys try buying your alternators and starters from Alternator Starter Express. If you call them they will even build a Alternator for you that will support your power demands.
