My PS box has started leaking fairly decently. I'm thinkin the 3 months of being dry killed what was left of the 14 year old seals, cause its leakin from everywhere. Does anyone know how hard it is to rebuild one of these things, and where i can get parts for it. My other problem is that its got a lot of slop in it and the adjuster screw is rusted solid to the lock nut so i cant tighten it. I was kinda thinkin about getting a reman box, but $375 with a $220 core doesn't sound too nice. Anyone done this before, or know where i could have it rebuilt. thanks.

Hey Dallas is it the OEM Isuzu box. I know kits are dirt ship for pump, I think even Dealer sells it for cheap I checked once. If not I have guys I buy Pumps from I could check it for you. Let me know E-mail me or call.

No its not the OEM thats Kragens price, and i'm not talkin the pump i'm talkin the gear box. My pump is fine, and its not Isuzu its Chevy . i love goin to the parts store and havin to think about what truck that section of my rig came from to get replacement parts. and so rarely is it an isuzu part nowadays.

Come on dude, use the search feature!!! (on your browser, that is) http://www.steeringbox.com/and if that was not a simple address, try this: http://www.carsteering.com/The second one is not as good, but they might be a good resource. Good Luck, Michael

I rebuilt my gearbox sometime back. Bought a rebuild kit from St. Charles w/ all the gaskets and o-rings. It really wasn't that tough of a job save for getting the steering-wheel shaft off of the geargox. Prolly took about a total of six hours....driveway job. Worse thing was handling the worm gear with kid gloves, if it comes apart, well....we don't want to go there. Well, now as I recall, the worse thing was getting the @#$%^& pittman arm off of the sector shaft........really stressed my puller.
You really need the Helm manual for this as well, it explains and diagrams step-by-step. Chilton's and Haynes......worthless.
If you decide to do the job, index EVERYTHING so it goes back together the same. Watch out for paint/rust flakes.....read: KEEP EVERYTHING CLEAN.
Total cost for the job was probably around $50.00 US.
BTW - '91 Trooper LS, should be the same gearbox.
Regards,

I still have yet to find a place that will rebuild the box. Every place i call says "we just replace em with rebuilt ones". sorry but i aint buyin a $400 steering box to fix a few seals that cost $20. BTW would anyone be willing to email me that section of the Helm, I almost bought one last year, but now that so little of my truck is isuzu it just doesn't make sense to fork out the $$$

Sorry about that Dallas. I was under the impression that the box was Chevy and not Isuzu. I have to read carefully and move my lips sometimes.
Have you called Merlin to see what a rebuild kit would cost? I am pretty sure you could do the rebuild yourself without any problems.
I would scan and email you the parts of the Helm that would help, but I don't have a scanner anymore. I could read them to you over the phone?
I'll take a look any way and see what it looks like. It should not be too bad.
You could always go the route of your engine/tranny swap. Just get out the torch. It will fix it one way or another.

Dallas, I won't chastise you about searching cause I *know* you know better, but from the same question a month ago on the Tech forum: http://www.outdoorwire.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=86&t=001567&p=Just get a junkyard box. Sandblast and paint it and it's a good, cheap replacement. Get one from a southwestern state if you can and you'll be pretty much guaranteed the adjuster won't be frozen up on it. --Dan

thanks for findin that link for me dan. I'm kinda thinkin of gettin a J-yard box and rebuilding it, I'm kinda wary of doin all the work of replacing the box and havin it leak too Matt told me he got the seal kit for his for like $20. trooper, amigo, and rodeo boxes are all the same pre 94 right? theres a yard near me with a hundred 1st gen troops.
