Right you are, Mr Guy, on the garages! I once shot down a very steep ramp on 32nd Street near Madison Square Garden into a parking garage, only to brake just in time to avoid a water pipe would have made me a convertible.
As this was a five speed, I had to slowly let in the clutch and engage in reverse up --am I glad I didn't pop it then, or there would have been some major damage.
Keven, you're also right about the Raider vs. Mistu. Back in '87 when I was shopping for my first one, the Mitsu dealers were asking 14k and not haggling at all. But over at the Dodge dealer, I got a $500 rebate and (with Dad's help) was able to knock them down to 12K.
I put 188K on it, but it started smoking like crazy, so I sold it to a guy who shipped it off to Guatemala to be repowered more cheaply there. Instead of sinking 2-3K into a new engine, I figure I'd look for an 89 V6, as the four was kind of underpowered. I watched all the online listings, and found a dealer in nearby NJ who had one for 3.5K with 73K on it WAY back in his lot. He didn't have a service record, so I was able to get him down to 2.5k. I basically replaced the brakes and all hoses, fluids, tires and tuned it, and it's been fine since.
The day I went to pick it up, the salesman told me the dealership's owner had spotted the Raider after me and wanted to buy it for his sister to use, but he said he had shook hands with me on it, and a deal was a deal. I guess I got lucky there!
It's just been my experience that these vehicles just bring out the best in folks
