If it doesn't smoke and it's in good shape inside and out, I'd offer him $1500. If the rust is bad and the engine smokes, I'd offer him $1000. If he loves the truck, he might be offended, but those numbers are realistic. A cherry southern montero with those kind of miles is going for $2-2500 right now and that is with no rust and in great shape... no smoke.
