ok so i was out wheelin about 2 months ago, when i decided to try and show off and crawl up a ledge.. what a mistake. i munched my front bumper gas skid plate and worst of all my x-fer case skid plate. it bent up into the x-fer case and i must of damaged the front oil seal. i also cracked a bracket for the front pumpkin.. a superlift bracket which they replaced with minimal questions. and for free.
so its leaking where the front drive shaft bolts up to the x-fer case. my question is do you have to remove the transfer case to replace this? or is it as easy as unbolting the front drive shaft, unbolting the front cover, and pulling out the front oil seal. now in my FSM it shows two oil seals i'm hoping that its the front on and thats it. i dunno how to do it the FSM shows it.. and it doesn't look to hard but i wanted to ask to see what you all had to say.
BTW: going on a 600mile road trip with a leaky transfer case is very VERY messy. i mean i have/had oil everywhere. the back of my truck all underneath, all over my trailer, on the back of my trailer.. EVERYWHERE. maybe thats why everyone was staring at me when they passed me.. they musta been gettin sprayed with tranny fluid

thanks ryan

I am going through the same thing with the '88 I just bought. I'd love to know how long the dumbass drove it with about .5 quart of lube in the case.
Anyway, you only have to pull the driveshaft, then the output flange on the case. On mine it is a 30mm nut, the only socket I could find was $17. I noticed there is a very small seal inside or the flange itself, I guess to keep dirt from getting to the main seal.

great thank you..
but you konw what. for as much oil that was everywhere i'm surprised how much the case took. it probably only took about 1/2 QT of oil.. doesn't seem right to me.. i tried to check the tranny but the plug started stripping 12 point socket and everythign.. i don't wanna deal with it right now. but i am going to have to take that off and replace it for the next guy that gets my truck. it is a little wet around the front of the bellhousing but nothing like it was under the transfer case and everywhere behind it
thanks for your input.i should replace both seals correcT? or you think it is on ly the front one?
thanks ryan
