Having read a few posts, I checked the depressive depession chamber / secondary throttle and both are shot.<P>Vitals: 87 raider 2.6 Auto LSD 130K 255/70-15 Never been wheeling but would like to if I had more power. LI, NY<P>The depression chamber holds NO vacume (for at least the last 5 years) and as such, the secondary was stuck closed. plenty of carbon buildup.<P>I always thought the truck was naturally slow since it will get to 70-75 on the flats but has no torque to climb even the slightest hill at speed. it slows to 50-55, chugs at 45 on moderate hills.<P>Any comments? Options to consider:<BR>1. Do I find a donor carb and steal the depression chamber, then work the secondary free? <BR>2. Do a full rebuild (Is the depression chamber included with the kit?)<BR>3. Convert to the Weber k614<BR>4. Cut my losses and sell/junk<P>I would do the rebuild myself to save $. have done 2 holley carb rebuilds before with so/so results. <BR>(79 2.3 ford 2bbl, 69 merc 429 2bbl)<P>Is this way over my head? since posts state about $450 to rebuild, over $1K for new, yet a new weber is only $355 (http://www.webercarburetors.com/MINI.HTM)<P>What do you think

If the carb is working otherwise I would leave it alone if you get the secondary free.<P>Kevin C

My 2 cents.......<BR>Since you say you don't do any off-roading, or very little, the Weber is a good carb. I have one one my '88 Raider. The difference was easy to notice right away. On the streets it reacts very well, and gives pretty good fuel economy. But, I wish I didn't have it because I wheel often. Off-road the open air cleaner is no good. It sucks in way too much dirt and dust. And is prone to getting wet. I still plan on making something so I can re-use my original air cleaner (just haven't gotten around to it yet).<BR>By the way, I did price re-built Mikuni carbs at AutoZone, and AA Auto Parts. They had carbs at the same price of the Weber. So if price is important, they both can be had at about the same $$.<BR>Good luck.

also, you can look on websites like <A HREF="http://www.car-part.com" TARGET=_blank>www.car-part.com</A> or similar to find a used mikuni. I know it's a "crap shoot" but some places have DOA guarantees as well. I bought a carb from <A HREF="http://www.ritewayauto.com" TARGET=_blank>www.ritewayauto.com</A> (mikuni) for $125 if I remember correctly, with a 1-year guarantee and it worked beautifully. the straight across carb-carb swap was simple - just label and unhook all wires/hoses, unbolt carb, clean old gasket off, stick new gasket (from a caravan) in, and reconnect everything. It took so little time that Chris and I didn't even get a chance to drink a full six-pack [img]images/icons/grin.gif" border="0[/img]

Sounds like a used is the best choice, else the weber..<BR>Perhaps I could fab a sheet metal enclosure for the weber to keep the dirt out, I go through some deep water (24+") often on the way to work. and splashing has been an issue in the past ( the stock intake gets saturated a limits airflow, so I disconnect the tube and it is ok)<P>Thanks, Now if I could isolate the valve tap-ing... a little marvel mystery oil should help

Well, Got the Carb from Mr. Cheap... His depression chamber doesn't hold vacume either ( hole in diaphram) <P>Q: Before I replace the DC, Has anyone tried to remove the DC and just have a spring to open the secondary ?<P>Playing with my new "spare" carb it seems that as the primary approaches WOT, the secondary will start to open ( if there is vacume) Assuming there is always vacume. would this always open the secondary?<P>I guess Mikuni has designed this to close the secondary if vacume is lost ( low engine speed?, stall etc) to Get the vacume back up.. No vacume, no venturi effect and the carb runs lean....<P>If someone know carbs... please advise... Perhaps this will only be a temporary fix until the new DC arrives from Japan.<P>- Suggestions
