My a/c compressor is broken... #164758 05/26/03 03:59 PM

According to my a/c tech, the magnetic coil is grounded. And since the bearing is making funny sounds, he suggested we have that fixed, too.

I can't afford a brand new or surplus compressor (DENSO 15 series, I think) so I opted to have my current compressor opened up and worked-on.

Do you think this is a sound move?

Some aircon shops also want to replace the expansion valves (dual a/c), drier and (gasp!) even the evaporators. I think these shops are pulling my leg. Or do I really have to replace all those stuff even if my a/c was never run 'dry' (there was no refrigerant leak)

Total bill at the local shop for the bearing, magnetic coil, aux fan repair is US$ 56.00 and that includes labor and materials.

I would replace the accumulator/dryer, since they tend to go bad quickly if exposed to atmosphere, but only if the system was opened.

Need a Spot
Is it cooling now after you had it opened up? If you are happy with the cooling, then it must be okay. Please post the pressure readings after they opened it, both low and high sides, ambient temperature.
Good Luck.

fasteddy ,
Do you consider it 'system open' when they let the R12 out (yes, it's still on R12) to remove the compressor?

kiks ,
The Pajero is still sitting in the garage. I'm kinda busy at the moment. Maybe on Thursday or Friday.

I will try to see if I can get the info you requested afte they have finished with the job.

A clutch and clutch bearing normaly can be done without opening the system.
