No Fast Idle #17286 02/02/03 10:09 PM

And my final question for this morning...

My `87 22RE runs great and all but when I start it cold it doesn't go into the cold start fast idle (~1200 rpm) until it warms up.

Instead, it starts up at 800 RPM and sits there idling at 800. I have to manually fast idle it with my foot until it warms up.

What's the cause of this and how do I resolve it? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

I'm begining to see why the Heinous (Haynes) manual falls short. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />

Again, thanks!

It's probably your air flow valve. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I know this has been covered in SEVERAL different posts, but I'm hoping to get more specific information in regards to troubleshooting the Fuel Injection/Fuel Delivery relay system as well as the cold start injector system.

Thanks !</strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Tahoma, Arial, Helv, Helvetica, Sans">I would go here: http://www.autoshop101.com/autoshop15.html and read up.

I think Buster has your correct answer here. On my 85, what fixed this was the Aux. Air Control Valve. It isn't on the newer 22RE's (89 and newer). Look at replacing that.

Need a Spot
Vehicle: 1987,22RE,5spd,130 k miles

I've replaced the Auxilary Air Valve as suggested (even though my old one checked out within the OHM spec and visual inspection).

I also replaced/checked the following items:

Cold Start Injector OHM tests in spec.

Cold Start Injector Time Switch replaced.

Temp Sensor located directly next to the CSI time switch replaced.

TPS adjusted within spec.

MAF sensor tests within spec.

EGR cleaned & operational.

VSV switch checked & operational.

No vaccum leaks.

Coil tests within spec (primary and secondary).

New distributor (air gap is verified within spec)

New Bosch O2 sensor.

Engine timing set to 5 degrees 'jumped'.

Engine runs/starts on first crank when warm.

Battery voltage when cold = 12.5 volts

Alternator charging within spec & battery is taking charge.

Throttle body and intake plenum are clean and free of carbon deposits.

Coolant level is full and mixed accordingly.

No 'check engine' light has triggered.

Timing chain was completed 500 miles ago w/ parts from ENGNBLDR.com

Do the temp sensors located in the thermostat housing or the lower intake manifold affect the functionality of the cold start circuitry at all?

I really am checking everything by the book here and have nearly gone blind reading all the posts on the forum <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> What am I missing here ?!?!

Any technical input would be greatly appreciated.

My 87 DLX does this too.... except it's carb'ed... just like you said, runs great, but have to give it gas for the fast idle to kick in.

It looks like you've checked all the components and they all appear ok.Is it possible you have a bad wire connector or a bad wire going to one of these components.I'd use a multi-meter or have someone who knows how to use one, start checking your wiring. An easy way to check might be to have someone start the truck when cold while you wiggle the harnesses. It might lead you to the problem.Hope this helps a little.
