Getting the Wheeling Fever
First time here and I got a question.
Today I just added a 88 4runner 4x4 to my stable of Toyotas.I also have a 85 sr5 extra cab 4x4 and a 85 sr5 standard cab 4x4.
The question is this. Can I swap out the basic instrument cluster in the 4Runner with the sr5 type that has the tach and volt meter and such?
Is the wiring already on the harness?
Thanks in advance
If any of you are Desert Rats like myself stop by my website and have a look around.Little bit of offroading(done Suprise Canyon twice)and some Death Valley exploring.

yes you can it is a direct swap but you have to change the oil pressure sending unit just below your oil filter do not start it with out changeing that or you will damage the pressure gauge in the dash cluster

I did the same swap on my 92 2wd before I was mowed over by uninsured 17 year olds in dads F250... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="images/icons/mad.gif" />

But I digress.

The posts above are right, all you need is an SR5 oil sending unit and a wire from the coil to the back of the new cluster. It was quite simple and seems to be a popular swap. Good luck!

Here is a little write-up I made a while back:

Hope that helps.

Might even try it without running a cable for the tach. I didn't have to wire mine up. Just look at the plug (far one on drivers side) and see if you have all the conectors to match up with the hole in the cluster. maybe I just got lucky, but saved me some time none the less.

Thanks for the info guys!
Sounds like a easy swap.I have the spare oil sender so no prob there.I just can,t get used to looking at that basic cluster so now all I need is some time to do the swap.
You did a nice write up on the swap Stock 87. Thanks for the link

I recently got a SR5 cluster out of an 88 junker , replaced the oil sender on my 86'runner, swapped the bad water temp gage w a working one -thanks to Dajabr- and plugged it in and everything seems to work fine including the tach. See your in Al-Cajon, im out here near Alpine.

If anyone is looking for a sr-5 instrument cluster I have one. The top two tabs are broken but that doesn't really make much difference, still mounts fine with bottom two tabs and the top dash piece covers it up. It works fine I tested it the other day. It was out of a 87 4runner 4cyl. Anyone interested? Make me an offer. I was going to put on ebay, but have no digital camera and it's just sitting in the garage. you can email me at sonny@volcano.net or just reply. Thanks
