Hi All,

I have a small problem I'm trying to solve on the 22E. My idle is high when I first start the truck up as if the choke won't open up. I know it's fuel injected and has no choke but I'm used to my truck with the carb. So I tap the gas once or twice but it still stays high nearly until the engine comes up to operating temp.

Then, when at operating temp, it occasionally wanders high and low at idle.

I checked the air filter and the air intake hose for leaks but all checked out fine. No check engine light either.

Any clues as to what can cause this?? Thanks.

What's the idle speed after warm-up? If it's over ~1200 rpm, then you'll get problems. If it's high, turn it down with the idle set screw. If that doesn't work, you've probably got an air leak somewhere.

Your engine should be idling high (1500-1800 RPMs) when started cold. The Cold Start Injector and Auxialary Air Valve are in charge of this. When the engine gets up to temp, the ECU disables the CSI and the Air valve shuts itself off based on coolant temperature. Curbside idling should be around 750-800 RPMs when warm. If it fluctuates you may want to see if your coolant is low. Air in the cooling system throws the AuxAirValve into total confusion. MAy need to clean your throttle body, air valve etc too.

I don't have a tach so I'll have to hook one up to read it at cold idle and warm and adjust accordingly.

I did have a coolant leak and recently replaced the radiator last weekend. Perhaps that had something to do with it. I'll have to watch and see if it idles variably since the radiator change.

Similar situation here. Idles high at startup, like normal. After driving, idle stays high until I lightly tap the gas, then drops to normal 800 rpm. I think it's a sticky throttle assembly but maybe EGR valve?

I have new engine, new rad, new pump, new plugs, wires. Old plenum and hardware from old engine.

Dajabr it sounds like your problem could be a sticking dashpot or clogged dashpot filter. Try pulling the dashpot off temporarily. If that doesn't do it you are probably right that the throttle plate itself is sticking.

I never would have guessed it, since I've never heard of it. WIll poke through the Haynes until it stops raining... Thanks for the tip, will post results. Would this be related to JimSo's issues too?

Not having a tach, I adjusted the idle at running temp down to about what sounds right. That seemed to take care of the fluctuating idle at running temp. I'll see if it has any effect on the cold idle in the morning.
