Speaking of gear codes and the like, what do you do if the idiot who had the truck before you removed the VIN plate that has all that info on it? Can it be obtained by Toyota?

Anybody have an answer for this? Someone said something about a plate on the engine bay. Where exactly is this located?

The metal plate would be located on the engine bay firewall, inside the engine compartment. The ones I've seen are on the passenger side. These are usually metal plates and can be found on all toyota trucks prior to either '89 or '88. On the later models, Toyota move the location and put a metal plate or sticker on the driver's side lower door jam. This is on the body, not the door itself.

I seriously doubt that Toyota can replace the sticker or tag itself. However, most of the information about the truck can still be obtained from just the VIN number itself. As for gear ratios and things like that, knowing the year, engine and tranny and factory tire size, will net you a very good bet. Trannys can usually be identified just by looking at them and what models they came on.

If the vin sticker is missing from the doorjam, it's very likely the truck was repainted.
