Absolutely I had to anchor it! Actually I had 2 anchor points to large trees (yes I used straps), and I also blocked and turned the wheels. This was so steep that when I was winching my truck lifted off of its suspension. It was a fun recovery. What I failed to mention in the earlier post is that the truck is still there on the trail. It had too many flat tires to drive it out of there so we have to go back next week to finish up.
