The truck will NEVER come out of 4x4 unless you back up IN 2wd far enough to unlock the hubs. When you restart the engine the sensors need a revolution or 2 to " re-sense" that the truck is in 4wd. 4wd is a mechanical action, it cannot disengage itself. With auto hubs you can "spin to lock" if you get stuck after forgetting to lock your hubs. No need to actually move forward. I wont say its easy on the hubs or t/case, but it will work. With manuals you simply get out and lock them.
