Just want to confirm my assumptions or see if I'm all wet <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> so here goes.

On a gen1 with auto hubs engaged and the truck 4x4, you stop and turn the truck off. When you restart the truck, the display shows the axle pic but you don't get the wheel lock pic to light up again until you move forward.

So I am assuming there isn't any way to start out in 4wheel drive, right? There are times when we are getting blasted with snow and I'd like to be able to start out right in 4x4 but it doesn't seem possible, is that true? So therefore too, with auto-hubs, once you are stuck and in 2wd there isn't any way to engage 4wd, true?

Thanks.

The truck will NEVER come out of 4x4 unless you back up IN 2wd far enough to unlock the hubs. When you restart the engine the sensors need a revolution or 2 to " re-sense" that the truck is in 4wd. 4wd is a mechanical action, it cannot disengage itself. With auto hubs you can "spin to lock" if you get stuck after forgetting to lock your hubs. No need to actually move forward. I wont say its easy on the hubs or t/case, but it will work. With manuals you simply get out and lock them.

Thanks for the info...

Just so I understand.

1) If you are stuck and in 2wd you can put the truck in 4wd, which allows the front wheels to be able to turn (even though you aren't moving) thus locking the hubs?

2) If you shut the truck off while in 4wd, it will in fact still be in 4wd the next time you start, it just needs to be re-sensed to light the wheel lock light?

Sorry if this is pretty elementary stuff to most but I've never been clear on these two particular situations on a gen1.

Thanks.

As Lloyd mentioned, try to start out as slow as possible. The hubs will probably lock up all of a sudden, resulting in a pretty good 'shock' to the drivetrain.

2) Yes.
