After I failed my smog test (NO too high) I searched around for a replacement cat. As you would expect the dealer prices were extreme (out of this world) and so I did a search and learned that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) folks had a list of replacement CAT sources on their website.

They were mostly CAT rebuilders and the idea was you send them your OE cat and they rebuilt them by removing the old internals and installing new internals.

Here's the list with numbers and the costs they quoted me and any additional details they provided.
- Economy Smog 800-232-7670 $275
- Converter West 800-352-5030 $195 (takes 8-10 days)
- Help 800-544-4357 (nothing available through his sources)
- Miller Catalyzer 800-826-6615 $200 (takes a day or two)
- Belmar International (no other info)

I also learned that in CA, it's illegal for a salvage yard to sell you a used CAT. There may also be "legal issues" with selling/buying a used one via individuals. So if you're in CA and need a new cat proceed w/ caution.

In the end, I had a local shop install a non-mitsu unit which is even smaller so I actually have even less of a "clearance" issue (not that that's ever been a problem).

Cost w/ installation (they cut the OE inlet and outlet flanges and welded them to the replacement unit) was ~ $225 and I didn't have any shipping charges or installation issues to deal with.
