Run up to 4 Wheel Parts Warehouse in Riverside yesterday and picked up the Superwinch hubs. I may have been able to get them a bit cheaper elsewhere but having them so close and they actually looked at the hubs BEFORE I came to get them to make sure they were the right ones. The guys at 4 Wheel were great. I actually slapped them on in the parking lot and took Laura (Granny) and Bud the Dog up to Big Bear to try them out. They work well. Now, what kind of a maintenance schedule should I put them on and what should be done to them during maintenance?

It was so easy to do that you put them on in the parking lot?

Give us some help regarding installing the manual hubs... Any tricks? Hints? How long did it take?

Do NOT use a 3mm wrench on the little ones, or you'll tear out the screw head...don't ask how I know. 3.5mm is too large...1/8" is just right. On the big bolts, tap the 8mm wrench into them with a hammer until they bottom out to make sure you have full contact or, again, you'll chew the bolthead out. I used an 8mm allen socket with a largish ratchet and an extension.

Be sure you have C-clip pliers handy. It'd be hard to get that clip off otherwise.

Have a pot or tube of axle grease handy to replenish what you wipe out.

Took me an hour on the first one, well under 30 minutes on the second. The time on the first one was involved in carefully taking everything apart so I knew where it went, as I'd not had it apart before. The second one went MUCH quicker.

You don't have to jack anything up or remove the wheel. Doing this in the parking lot of the part store is quite feasible.

lNothing against ya Acidophilus. Mine only ttok me about 30 minutes to swap both of them. The directions that came with the hubs are straight forward. Take the chrome "Auto" hub cover off with a suitable tool (Pliers or strap wrench). Makes it much easier to get to the 8mm socket head screws. Carefully remove the snap ring and the shim behind it (save for installation later). Remove the two 1/8" hex screws in the hub and seperate the hub halves. Place one of the gaskets supplies in the kit behind the new hub base, align the splines and install reusing the 8mm socket head bolts. Using a flat blade screwdriver pry outward on the axle shaft to bring it out as far as possible. Reinstall the shim and then replace the snap ring. using the supplied 1/8" bolts and the two previosly removed, install the top of the hub and tighten. Acidophilus' post about the procedure and the use of the proper sized wrenches is right on. If you don't have the right tools get them. What I'd suggest is a good 8mm hex on a 3/8" drive socket. A ball-end 1/8" Allen wrench is useful to get the bolts started then use the straight part of the wrench for tightening. One more thing, after you drive the truck for a while after you install the new hubs recheck all of the fasteners to make sure none loosened. If I can do it, anybody can. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Thanks, Gents, for the insider tips on an install I've been meaning to make forever. I've already had a front seal leak and get replaced under Warranty, so having the front axles turn only when in 4WD will be nice. OEM Manual hubs on my '86 2 door were spiffy. Your info may help me to get around to that Hub install on my '00...

Bill... For a Road Trip, cruise out by Joshua Tree and see the "Energy Dome" that a wacked-out Relative of mine built. He saw a few UFOs as a Test Pilot and, like my Grandpa, was a real Desert Rat who held huge get-togethers in various aesthetic rock formations, etc.. Kinda of a "New Age" thinker, back before it was kewl.

Van Tassel Integratron

The Dome's not all that much to look at, but the drive out is fun. We went out there just after a good-sized earthquake a few years back. The then-fresh evidence - like road damage - of earth movement was pretty amazing.

I'm looking forward to a leisurely Road Trip out from CO later this Spring to see the folks in Sun City CA.
