I am wondering how much of a differance there is between the 3.0 and 3.5l engines in the montero? And also if these are the same basic engines as in the 3000gt??? I would like to know about parts interchangeability? Has anyone heard of using the turbo setup off of a 3000gt on a montero?

My buddy bought it dirt cheap, and I planned on doing the VR-4 conversion to it....problems were...

1.Cost. We had a chance to get a wrecked 97 VR-4, the ENTIRE front clip including the ECU for $3200. But if you can find ANY VR-4 complete setup for that price, consider yourself lucky...Going rate is about $3500-$5000 for a low milliage engine setup that is not thrashed..

2.Space. The 3000gt is a wide vehicle, especially in the engine compartment...since it's the same engine as a 1st.gen monte 3.0 (6g72) the block is about all thats the same... After that, intakes, all the water, oil plumbing, exhausts etc... are totally different....You cannot fit the stock exh.manafolds even without the turbos bolted on inside the engine compartment so custom manafolds and turbo/intercooler plumbing becomes $$$$..

anything can be done for a $$$, but after all in all, the price just for the motor, and all the custom fab work etc... would be easily $6000....and let's not forget the amount of time we'd be putting in....

3.HP/Torque to RPM ratio: The VR-4 engine is 320hp at 6500rpm....It has completely different gearing then our Montes do, therefore, when we drive, the motor is way out of it's powerband area, as the TT 3.0 doesn't really start to pull or develop good torque/HP until after 3500rpm....Not to good for our vehicles since our 3.0 generates almost all of its torque under 3000rpm....and the 4dr weighs almost 2000lbs. more then the 3000gt... (3000gt=3120lbs. 90dr=4950lbs)

There's more but I'm too tired... this is the short list...

but again, if you have the $$$, anything can be done...

I don't have much experience with the 3.0. I know when it comes to finding parts the 3.5 is much harder to find parts for. They are also much more expensive. As far as power, I test drove a 3.0L before I bought my 3.5L. Needless to say, the 35hp difference was a factor in my choice.

Monty, what kind of rear differential gear oil do you use? I bought mine, with a rear differential lock too, without the owners' manual.
Is it a open differential?
Thanks in advance
