Can you link to it? I missed that one somehow. I agree that the 7M-GTE is a far superior engine to what we got in our trucks, I just never knew it fit in an IFS rig.

I've been salivating over a 7M-GTE swap but with CA tight emmissions laws, would I have problems passing smog on the visual? [ February 17, 2003, 12:47 PM: Message edited by: moomba ]

It will fit with an IFS rig. I did one. I just never put the diff back in, then we converted to SAS afterwards. But all you have to do is make a custom oil pickup and oil pan. Not very hard, I have done a couple vehicles that require that. Like putting a 7MGTE into an 85 supra. I have done two of them.
I diesel would be sweet. If I could get my hands on one, I would definatly do one.
It is better to make torque at high rpm than at low rpm, because you can take advtage of gearing. ---------------------------------------------------------------- www.supracharged.com1994 4runner - SAS, 38 TSL's, Turbo 7MGTE swap, Turbo Tranny Dual T-case, D44/D60 ront/rear

The 7M-GTE would be the engine of choice for me, but unfortunately it went out of production in 1992 and my truck is a 1994. Putting an older engine in a newer truck flat won't happen in California. [ February 17, 2003, 01:36 PM: Message edited by: YourMom ]

How does a 7MGTE bolt with no adapters? I'm totally f*ing confused now.
Okay... WHAT DOES IT TAKE to bolt a 7MGTE to a W56 tranny?
WHY do you have two bellhousings welded together in your rig? So you can run an R151?
What the hell! I was all turned off because of the custom bellhousings, now you're saying no welding, and no adapters?

It occurs to me that "best" is a relative term, so the best engine swap will vary by who you ask.
So for what it's worth, here's what I want from an engine swap.. A. Obviously, a substantial increase in power, but not more than any stock part of the vehicle can handle (tranny, diffs, etc.) B. Easy Bolt-in install. Let' say a good way to put this would be "easily reversible". So gotta be toyota and no V8's. C. Small or no subsequently required mods, ie: no IFS to SAS, no new gauges, no replacement or mod to any part that worked fine with the stock engine. No turbo for this reason, gas tank and ECU mods needed (I think). Exceptions would be swapping in the donors tranny, diff, etc. to handle the increased power, only if straight bolt-in.
My logic is that these limitations will keep things reliable and not require any more service than the original engine. Preferably less. The major swaps will invariably require seriously educated mods, tweaks and troubleshooting, which I can't handle. Mentally or financially. So I'm thinking 7mge if the trannys bolt up and the elec mods are minor. [ February 17, 2003, 05:38 PM: Message edited by: dajabr ]

Unfortunatly toyota put a reverse style clutch into the R154. Same tranny as the R151F, but the R154 had a longer input shaft, so the bellhousing was longer. And you can't swap out the input shaft because the gear welded onto the input shafts are different.
But, if you don't plan on pushing over 300hp, you can run a W series tranny. I would not use the G series, the internals are weaker.
To make the W or G series work, all you need is the bellhousing from any 83-92 N/A 5 speed supra, then of course you will need the clutch assembly and slave cylindar.

later tonight, or tomorrow, I will post some pics of a 7MGTE swap I did last month. Took 24 hours total time, over a 2 week period. Could only work on it a little at a time. Lots of the time was spend goofing off. So in reality, probably 18 hours of real work. Wiring took me the longest because I had to draw up a schematic. Now that I have one, I know I can do my next one in 12 hours.
Anyway, it was a 92 2wd pickup. No special adapters, no welding. Used 5MGE mounts, and it bolted right up. Did have to use a hammer in a few spots, but nothing two serious. No changes to the xcrossmember, or driveline required.
