For those in Ca, the law as I understand it is that if you swap a motor, it must be of the vehicle's year or later and must have all smog equipment that newer motor came with. You can't put a diesel in a non-diesel vehicle but you can go the other way as long as the smog stuff is on, etc.....
Even a built Supra motor, remember, had to pas emmissions in a car which have higher standards than a truck. So there is little chance unless it is not running correctly, that you'll have a problem passing emmissions.
After the swap, you can take it to a referee for cert.
There is more info the the Ca DMV website.

I love my 5.0. Sure it wasn't easy but it was fun and if I had to do it again.. I would.
Bottom line is you are swapping engines, might as well get some umph from it! If you plan on racing your rice rocket get the 7M or whatever but if your looking for torque and going through the work anyway - get a V8!

Has anyone researched which vehicles have oil pans that'll clear an IFS diff? How much off is one talking? An inch? Half a foot? Would it merely involve pounding a large dent in the oil pan with a BFH or cutting out a section and rewelding it?
Second, in CA, can one swap in a diesel from the saem (overseas) model (ie, hilux diesel into a Toyota pickup)?

It would require a redisign of the oil pan and pickup. Something like this
I did this in about an hour, now that I have a pattern, I can make another in less.

how much does the 7M have? Don't even try to tell me it is more powerful than a multiport V8..

My 7MGTE makes close to 400ft/lbs of torque and 400hp. Stock motor. All I have done, is opened up the exhaust, and turned up the boost to 12 psi. In order to do either swap, 5.0 or 7MGTE, you have to build an exhaust, so the same mods would be performed on both motors.
At 7 psi, they do 230 ft/lbs of torque and 254 ft/lbs of torque out of a dinky little 3.0. That is 2 liters smaller than a 5.0, and lighter for that matter.
The 2JZ which is the next generation 7M, does 320 hp and 315 ft/lbs of torque.....stock boost, stock exhaust.
So, yes, I am saying that the 7M has more power than your 5.0 v8. [ February 18, 2003, 07:38 PM: Message edited by: SuperRunner ]

Not to mention, that the 5.0 will only make that much torque for a small moment during the entire RPM range. It will quicky get there and quickly fall off.
The 7M will take slightly longer to get there, but will then stay up there over half of the RPM range.
With that, I am saying that a 7M pushing 300 ft/lbs of torque will beat a 5.0 V8 pushing the same amount, because the 7M will have more power over the entire range.
For instance, here is my dyno sheet. Unforutanly the guy doing the test, didn't step on the gas until 3,000 RPM. I need to go back and get it from 1,000. Anyway, subract 35% of 400 from 400 and you get 260 . This is rear wheel power running 35 inch tires. With larger injectors, I can run 25 psi which will put me over 500hp and 500 ft/lbs of torque at the crank.

With that run, you can see that I started running rich for some reason between 3,800 RPMS and 4,400 RPMS which is why there is a dip in the power. With a little tuning, that would take care of that problem.
