Lots of different opinions here-this is mine: I love Toyotas but I'm gonna go with the Chevy 4.3-injected. Lighter than a SB350 & lots o power.

Jus my 2 cents.

Plus I believe the EGR doesn't stick out like on the 7M.

I have picked up a 2JZ, and will either be putting it into my 4runner, or into my 89 2wd pickup. Don't know yet.

It is better to make torque at high rpm than at low rpm, because you can take advtage of gearing.

yea, with simple mods, you can make the 2jz-gte engine really powerfull, and quite a nice low end. and they are really good engines from all i can gather. did you pick up a turbo version, or the non..

Brandon--post up some 5.0 dyno results.

The 5.0 makes 215 hp and 285 ft lbs torque.
The 7M-GTE makes 232 hp and 254 ft lbs torque.

I searched the web and couldn't find any stock 5.0 curves--this is as close as I could find:

i got 205 rwhp 268 rwtq out of a 1990 lx coupe with just h pipe, 65mm tb, crank pulley, k&n air filter, stock timing. Source

Meanwhile, here's a thread explaining how to get 268 Rwhp and 286 rwtq on a 7M-GTE with roughly the same amount of money the above guy spent.

The 5.0 makes less power and more torque than the 7M-GTE, but the 7M has FAR (let me say that again...FAR) more potential for less money than you'd spend on a 5.0. Hell, my Supra is making well over 300 hp and 340 ft lbs with just a K&N filter, 3" exhaust and a couple of washers under the wastegate for an additional 2.5 psi boost.

In case you haven't seen it, here's a stock 7M-GTE power curve: (Note the flat torque curve)

Feel free to post up stock and modified 5.0 charts.

pretty impressive..

I don't have any numbers or charts and I don't want to race

But I might just throw some of this up on some of the 5.0 boards I visit to see what they say. Not really denying anything - I got a mustang and drove it home for $700, sold parts for more. It was the deal I found, maybe if I found something else I woulda gone another way. My truck is far from anything that could be raced but I can step on the gas while moving and peel out, do donuts on the road with my 38" swampers, and I'm happy with it

(I need a new pic, got some mods and cleaned it up)

during my swap I have been blown away with how much easier it is to get ford parts and how much cheaper they are. Keep parts costs in mind, and upgrades - look in a summit catalog and see how much aftermarket toyota stuff there is compared to the 5.0..

Real World trail use. I can idle my 7MGE down to 300rpm on the trail and not stall.

Ken, how did you fit the 7M-GTE with the fan in there?! Does the hood close? Looks like the radiator sticks up quite a bit. Did you get the A/C to fit?

With all this talk about swapping 85-92 7M-GE's and GTE's, has anyone tried to swap a '93+ supra or celica engine in? Won't fit? The hoods on those supras look pretty long.
