Need a Spot
I am about to replace the clutch in my '87 Runner (22RE, manual, stock gears 4.10's, with 32's)

I am debating wether or not to install one of the various 10lb heavier flywheels that are available. Will the $270-300 price tag pay-off in noticeable performance increases ? Or should I just have my stock flywheel stone-ground and focus on getting gears (4.56's) ?

Thanks for the help with my decision.

get gears-

You will notice a difference better for low end .Now is the time to change it since you are in there . I am sure you will end up changing gears later but that is a hole different project

PS : at least go with a Centerforce clutch stage 3 about $300 for everything

It will help your bottom end acceleration and make takeoff at low speeds smoother but if I'm not mistaken it will affect your performance at higher RPMS. In other words, acceleration on the highway will be worse than it is now - not exactly what I want in my second gen.

For what purpose is this? I can see it helping to avoid stalling on trails when crawling. It will hurt acceleration period as you are now putting energy into the flywheel that could be going into the truck's forward momentum. Since energy is conserved, any time you add mass or intertia, you take the finite amount of energy the engine can produce and put it to other things. The result is less forward momentum for a given amount of work done by the motor.

Seems to me like if trail duty is the goal, gears are the way to go.

Frank.

For a motor this weak, that just flushing money... Autozone clutches frequently last years in 22RE powererd rig.

I have one. The TRD 10inch clutch package came with a new heavier flywheel, pilot, throw out, clutch, and pressure plate.

On my rig I decided to go this route becuase I too needed a new clutch. I also have a LC header and 2.25 free flow exhaust. My diffs are 4.10's and I run 33x12.50.15 mud tires.

It does just fine on the highway but on the trails I really do need lower gears in the diffs.

I like it and Im glad I have it! Soon I will regear and it will really help then.

I supose for those of you that are more worried about money you could just go to a junk yard and find a used clutch for that matter . But i for one feel that if there is a better product to be had then that is the way to go . IE: super swampers or firestone steet tires both are round and will get you down the street ? go with the centerforce and heavey flywheel you will not be disapointed and you will have the peice of mind nowing that you have the best

I put the TRD kit on my 95 3.0 which included a heavy duty clutch and a 5 lb heavier flywheel. It's not true about the heavier flywheel helping your bottom end. What flywheels do is store energy. You put that energy to use when you take off from a stop. So the flywheel really helps in stop & go traffic.
