I left a little uptravel, but did it mostly to support the winch and put another inch of tire under the truck. The lifting the wheel problem is counteracted by the locker I figure. As rutted as some of the trails are around here, it's nice to not drag the rear diff and the skidplate all over the place. Going from a 31 Goodyear to a 32 Swamper actually helped significantly in that (not enough, but some). You're right though, it does not do wonders for the ride or front end wear.
