Cranking your Torsion Bars... What are you thinking?!?! #230423 05/28/03 03:02 PM

Aside from raising the preload for a heavier front bumper and/or winch, why are so many of you cranking your T Bars? Aren't you worried about your now limited up-travel? I had a Nissan Hardbody 4x4 several years ago, and the previous owner had cranked it's T Bars and there was little to no upwards travel because of the already high pre-load. So I cranked them back down and instantly had a few more degrees of approach angle before I started lifting rear tires.

I mean, unless you have to account for the extra front end load like, for say Harliv or Scott's TJM T15 Steel bullbar/bumper, cranking your T Bars is just so you can fit big tires under it for going to the mall. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" />

I left a little uptravel, but did it mostly to support the winch and put another inch of tire under the truck. The lifting the wheel problem is counteracted by the locker I figure. As rutted as some of the trails are around here, it's nice to not drag the rear diff and the skidplate all over the place. Going from a 31 Goodyear to a 32 Swamper actually helped significantly in that (not enough, but some). You're right though, it does not do wonders for the ride or front end wear.

C442 is a happy guy today isn't he <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" /> ......no t-bar cranking going on here but when I install the fab'd bumper and winch then it's AWN!!!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" /> Not for bigger tires though.......I'm not a rock crawler either so......mine's utility use only!

Oh, I'm not trying to be a smartass ... I just don't see why someone would want to crank the T Bars (aside from additional weight up front due to new hardware) when the same thing can be achieved by going with a Body Lift with just a little extra effort. That way your off-road prowess, so to speak, is not compromised.

Hello! Newbie and probably the only girl here. I did mine to level the truck and because of the Smittybuilt tube front bumper. The 2wd version has quite a rake to it that I didn't like. Although I did bend the top of my front passenger shock when I hit the local railroad tracks too fast. Ooops! WTH, they're stock anyway! That's why I was looking into a pre-runner shock that would fit. Anyone know of any? Thanks guys, <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

A related question. Is there a grill guard available for a T with a 2" BL? Since the one I want attaches to the frame, the portion in front of the headlights will be too low and the cross bar will block the lights. Cannot be solved by torsion bar adjustment.

The Smittybuilt tube I have has the two lower bars and a raised middle tube to protect the engine/grill area. The headlight area is not blocked at all and it mounts to the bumper frame. Here's a picture of what it looks like but it's on a Jeep 'cause I can't find one for the truck right now.

However --
To compensate for my T15 I installed new 25mm T-bars months before I installed my bullbar.

The bars have never been cranked, even after I installed my T15. The SWAY-A-WAY torrsion bars are one of the best mod's I have made on my truck.

IMHO this is a great mod for all T100's.

Got some Downey's off a guy over on PBB for $25. They were never put on his truck and seem to be brand new. I'm not gonna f--- with it until I have my bumper built.
