That might work. Sometimes I do the oil and get busy greasing or otherwise inspecting before I remove the filter. The extra drain time (30 minutes?) reduces mess some. Never tried the nail trick. Getting a cup under there is the surest way I've found to keep things tidy. I've also heard that breaking the seal then slipping a ziploc over the filter before loosening it helps reduce mess.
