One way to minimize the mess when you loosen the oil filter is to make a catch basin from the bottom of an old coolant jug or other appropriate container. I think I made one out of the bottom of a gallon milk jug. Just stick it right under the filter and you'll find that keeps the upside down oil filter mess to a minimum.
