Hello I am a tech at Valvoline Oil Lube Center and have a 2001 Tacoma. I ,use, and would reccommend Mobile 1 10w30 syn for the oil (Better for the motor if you have a lead foot... use 5w30 if you arent hard on the gas...it is formulated more toward better gas milage),for the rear end don't use Mobile 1...use Valvoline 75w90 syn. It is a "must have" fluid, very litte wear and breakdown with it.

P.S. call around for a Valvoline or any other kind of "lube place" and ask if they have a T-Tech machine (tranny power flush). If you have the money use Mobile 1 syn ATF. I noticed an immediate difference. This is the best fluid upgrade you can get....TRUST ME I KNOW. I use all these fluids in my own truck (I also get a discount so $$$ isnt an issue) and would reccommend this to any Tacoma driver...Offroad or onroad.

Can one of you guy's tell me how much Valvoline 75-90 it takes to fill the rear transfer case and the front??? Someone told me not to put more than 6 pints in each one . Is that right? In the old days we just filled them until it ran out the fill hole. Also do i have to drop the front skid plate to get at the front transfer case??? Thanks for any info you may have. I'm just trying to learn all about these Tacos so i can do it myself and save a few bucks. Mike

Mike, your owners manual should tell you the capacities. I just filled them til it started coming out the fill hole.

Chadman, That's one of the problems... The owners manual is a little confusing because they are talking about several vehicals and what they take to fill them. It looks like 1 quart but i put in 6 pints (1 and 1/2 quarts) as i was told to do by a Toyota mechanic and it still does not run out. They say if you over fill it the seals will blow out. Mike

WOW! It's amazing how far off the dealer parts dept was off on the amount of gear oil for the front and back diff. on my 2001 Tacoma 4x4.
It takes 2.9 quarts for the back and 1.4 for the front.
I went with the Valvoline syn 75-90 only because my local auto parts store carries it. Wish i could have found the Mobile syn grease but no luck . No problem finding the Mobile1 syn oil. Mike

I'm wondering why filling it to the recommended level would blow a seal when there is a diff breather?
