This is a strange problem, and I hope some one can help me. Here are the details,
* It's RMP related, higher the RPM higher the higher of pitch of the grind. * It's is more noticable when the engine is cold but less so after 10 minutes of driving * The noise is coming from the right side (I sit in the drivers seat of course) of the truck. * The noise can be noticed at any time when doing a U-Turn, EG. more pressure on the right side. * A soft bump can create the noise but hard bumps do not. * Jump up and down on the front bumper while the truck is running, but not moving and I could not recreate the noise.
Thanks in advance.... James [ July 08, 2003, 10:06 AM: Message edited by: coldrain ]

This sounds weird ... but I swear it's worth the time to check in to.
I had a somewhat similar issue once where I got a noticeable grind at right about 2,000 rpm. It tended to go away after 2k, but it always happened right at 2k.
Anyway ... after much troubleshooting, the issue turned out to be a skid plate that had gotten jammed up and was touching in the wrong place. Apparently 2,000 rpm was just the right harmonic balance to have the grinding effect.
I bent out the skid plate, and the problem immediately went away.
Definitely worth looking in to ...

Stones under a skidplate/bashplate?
Mine has a habit of after ploghing through shingle rivers of getting a few stones between the gearbox/transfer case housing and bashplate. It seemed to be RPM realted, but really it was just the vibration grinding the stones i.e. engine vibration was RPM related.

How about you tell us what was "swapped"? Engine, solid axle, hubs, transmission, ???

The 2.3L was pulled and a 2.6L was put in. The transmission was left in during the swap. As this was first try at this, it took a lot longer than I wanted. It took just over one month.
