Has anyone replaced the entire front axle on an 86 Trooper? I've tried searching but can't quite find the answer... My '86 has the 8-bolt and I need big $ to nurse it back to health: CV's on both sides, lower balljoints, one wheel bearing, etc. Should I spend the money to rehab that sucker or is there another option? Can I replace the entire frt end with a 10 bolt out of a 88-91 Trooper? I'd love to have the LSD option in the future and I already found a '91 frt end at the boneyard. What is involved?

I believe that both Chad and Bruce have done this, but neither post here with much frequency.
If you can get the parts for a reasonable price (sniff around the folks who have recently done live-axle swaps and have those parts available) and have pretty decent mechanical skills, I say go for it!

The 8 and 10's bolt diffs, I'm told have the same mounting point. Your main difference is going to be the "A" frames. The 10 bolt uses longer ones. If you use the whole suspension it should fit. But, the "A" arm mounts at the frame could be different. That's the one thing I'm not sure of. I plan a simular project in the distant future, only my plans are to swap the entire 91 Trooper frame and suspension under my "86". The plan is to use my old Rodeo 10 bolt in it after I install the ARB and 5:39's. CJ

I know Daniel AKA Trooper4life has swapped the 8 out for a 10. He also is the guy who developed the drop brackets. Here is the post web pageI stand corrected. [ April 01, 2003, 09:20 PM: Message edited by: TrooperMark ]

I'm sticking with the 8-bolt for now. I'm getting the cv's done tomorrow ($129.00 labor, not too bad ) Thanks for the input. Sounds like this is a possibility for those more financially blessed than myself.

i think a correction is in order here....he "made" drop diff brackets.....these were "developed" in Japan.....and have been around for a few years....unfortunately it is just WAY cost prohibitive to import them.
not being a deek here....just saying
