T5 short throw shifter, has anyone ever tried this? #251868 04/29/03 01:37 PM

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a '92 Rodeo with what I think is the BW T5, although I haven't been under the truck to check it yet. But, the fluid is Dextron III (imagine my suprise after Jiffy Lube changed it and told me my manual used this stuff) so I'm pretty convenced that it is the T5. The real question is if anyone has swapped out the stock shifter for a short throw version? From what I've seen, the T5 was common to the Mustang and Firebird/Camaro so there are quite a few shifter options available.

Next question is if there are other tranny's that fit in the place of the T5?

1992 Isuzu Rodeo, newly rebuilt 3.1L v6 and rear diff; clear corners, bumper and tails; Aiwa MP3 head unit; Infinity Perfect 10.1 sub; Polk seperates; Sony cross and amps.
Next projects -- New paint, tint, billet grill, nerf bars.

now as far as I know the only tranny isuzu ever used was the MUA5. I also know that the t-5 that came in the s10's with 2.8 v6's has the same bellhousing pattern. i can't really help with the rest of your question.

There actually is an easy way to confirm which tranny you have.

The MUA5 shifter goes straight into the tranny - there is no linkage.

If people are able to go to a short throw version of the T5, then by definition there is external linkage.

Either crawl under your rig and look for the linkage, or alternatively, pull your shifter boot inside and see if the shifter goes directly into the tranny.

IF YOU HAVE THE MUA5, get that Dextron III out immediately. The MUA5 uses motor oil for lubrication.

If you have a 4X2 rather than a 4X4, you may well have the T5.

Most of us here have 4X4s (ever wonder why it is called 4X4wire.com?) so we tend to assume that you have a like rig unless you tell us differently. When I saw that your future plans include drop spindles and 20" rims, I realized that you probably don't have a 4X4.

Hmm, I could be wrong, but I think that there are more members here than just 4x4 owners, so I guess IÆm not seeing your point Jim. I do enjoy reading posts on many ôlikeö member owners of Isuzus, and sans the differences in the drive line (and I realize that they are major), the majority of information that I have found here is applicable to 4x2Æs and 4x4Æs alike. It would be a shame if us 4x2Æers couldnÆt contribute, as well as share, in the information found here. Please bear with us that donÆt live in the holy "4x4 land", but I think that there is room for us all.

You are correct in the 4x2 configuration of my truck, and I do indeed have the BW-T5 transmission, and it does have the correct Dextron III fluid, so no trips to the underbelly of the truck just yet, or at least not to swap tranny fluid.

But, this again brings up the question of if anyone else has tried a shifter swap for a T5 to make it a shorter throwing linkage. The T5 has a roughly a 5 mile throw from gear to gear, and something in the 1-2 mile range would be better ;-)

rattler, We can all be friends here.

I think Jim was just pointing out that you may have excluded some pertinent info about your truck that relates directly to the tranny it has.. which was part of your question.

Rattler-

Yup, Jim was just pointing out that the first assumption around here is that a rig is 4x4. We all do it and it is not a judgement call, just an assumption. It also explains Paul's response. Isuzu did use T5's, but never as a 4wd. The rest of the 5 speeds are MUA5's (or some other for pre-'88 rigs).

Don't worry, we put up with you 2wd folks all the time.

As has been said, start with making sure that it is indeed a T5. You seem to have made that designation between your first and second posts. How? Don't assume that just because they used ATF, that it is a T5. Crawl under and look for the Isuzu cast into the side of the case. If there is one, then it is the MUA5. Sans one, it is the T5. Might as well know what you are starting with. There are 2wd MUA5's out there.

As for using a short throw shifter, I cannot think of anyone around here mentioning using one before. I would guess that it would be a relatively cheap experiment and if it does not work, then you can sell it to some Mustang fan.

Good Luck,
Michael

Yup, we're all friendly, here... discussion is certainly focused around 4x4s but there are some of use folk (me!) that have 2WD Isuzus, as well.

I'm also not aware of anyone that has set up a short-shifter on an Isuzu T5, but I'm with Michael -- it will probably work -- give it a try and let us know!

At one time (long long ago, far far away, blah blah blah) I had an '86 LX 5.0 Mustang with the T5, to which I bolted a Hurst short throw shifter. The T5 is a top-loader, and the shorter throw comes from changing the shifter's pivot point relative to the internal linkage. I couldn't find a picture of the Hurst unit, but this picture of a B&M shifter should help explain what I'm trying to say.

As to whether this would work on an SUV, almost anybody else's guess is better than mine.
