That is an intriguing question. Perhaps a short throw mechanism from some other tranny will fit the MUA5, but I suspect no one has tried.

To answer the question will be either $$$$ or time consuming or both, unless you get real lucky and one of your early investigations works.

I doubt that many, if any one shop will have more than one model in stock, if they even have that. Since we now know that there is an option available for a T5, you could start by finding a junkyard 2WD Rodeo with the T5 and buy the shifter. Once you have that in hand, you can compare it to the shifter in your own rig and see what the similarities or differences are.

Thanks for the insight. I haven't saved enough pennies yet to buy the shifter, but IÆve certainly have seen quite a few that are available for the T5, so I think that IÆll give one a try pretty soon. The tranny that I have does not have any Isuzu badges in the case, so IÆm thinking that with all of the other factors (Dextron III, 4x2 configuration, 92 model year) that this is indeed a T5. Dog-gone-it, I ended up underneath the truck anyway, but at least not to swap fluid!!

One interesting thing that IÆve found in all of this is that the T56 is a bolt in replacement for the T5 (although most sites indicate that some surgery to the floorboard and the tranny cross member). For those curious, a T56 (no longer BorgWarner but now Tremec) is a 6 speed tranny and it shipped in late 90Æs TransAms and Camaros, again the link back to these two cars ;-) It currently ships in the Dodge Viper and Corvette, so itÆs built to take it, but I doubt that my 3.1L would ever produce enough HP to ever put that into risk. I guess that IÆll need to add that to my list of stuff to buy when I hit the lotto!!

Oh yeah, about the installation, here is what I found which to me indicates that shifter engages the internal linkage with a different pivot point. So, I guess when I make the swap I won't have to move the shifter from the dashboard to the back seat for a 1-2 gear shift ;-)

One interesting point made in the article is the reference to the T5Æs notoriously weak shift forks, and with the addition of an aftermarket shifter it provides you with adjustable shifter stops. I donÆt think that the stock shifter has this, so another plus for making the swap.
