The water pump on my 99 4Runner started leaking last year. I only had 19,000 miles and no radiator flushes or anything. One day I checked under the hood before a long trip and I saw coolant residue under the engine and along the water pump--but I never saw any coolant on the floor and the coolant level hadn't dropped noticably. After they replaced the water pump I had small amounts of coolant oozing out of the junction between the oil pump and the water pump. After 10 more days in the shop and a couple of visits by factory reps they tear off the oil pan and pump to find coolant stuck in some vacant chambers that was starting to seep out when the engine was hot. Apparently when they replaced the water pump some coolant spilled into places it shouldn't have been and was slowly working its way out. They cleaned it up and resealed (and used way to big a bead of FIPG in the process) and I haven't had any problems since. It really does make me wonder--this is a Toyota Truck after all?? BTW, I've seen more than a few reports of water pump failures on these engines (mostly Tacoma owners).
Paul
99 4Runner SR5 4wd
5-speed
